How Do We Know We're Really Sigma Kappa's?
 

I've been reading all the drama that's being going on in the Kappa Delta forums & the other GC forums in which a member was ousted as lying about her membership in KD. It made me curious to know how do we know if someone here on our boards is not really a member? I know that for the ladies that have been on here for a while, we've all likely verified to each other our membership but what would you do if you found out someone was lying on these boards about being a member?

I'll just be idealistic & assume that all my lovely Sigma Kappa's are classy & wouldn't stoop to do something so lame.

The problem with the internet is that you never really know who is what they say they are & who isn't. Honestly I don't think its a big deal if someone is misrepresenting an organization in an online community, its our actions in real life that say who we are, not a few harassing posts in a community that plenty of people don't even know exists.

I'll never share secrets of Sigma Kappa with anyone online, even if I have verified their name in the Sisters Only section. Anyone who even knows a Sigma Kappa could give you a name of a sister listed in that database. And knowing that I'll never share anything with a potentially fake Sigma Kappa or a real Sigma Kappa keeps my mind at ease when it comes to people lying about their membership status.

I think the people who waste their time to "oust" potentially fake members of their organization are just looking for another way to feel better about themselves. People who look for justification via the internet are more lame than those they accuse of being fake.

Yeah. I'd have to agree w/you here. I like to think I have more important things to do than to verify peoples identities. I believe that every lady on these boards that says she's a Sigma Kappa is really one but I have no way of verifying that unless I want to look each & every lady up but that's kind of pointless. Besides, no one here has ever said anything to make me doubt her so why would I investigate? I've said it before & I'll say it again. SK ladies are truly classy.

BaylorBean and I were talking about this the other day when we met for coffee. :) I have faith that everyone in our forum who say they are Sigma Kappas, are Sigma Kappas. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. We can all prove our membership in various ways. It only takes one phone call to determine membership in my eyes. If you know what you're supposed to know end of story.

i wouldnt go so far to say the KD's are looking to make themselves feel better for ousting someone online, we just know this girl isnt a member because she is claiming to be a part of our chapter.

Sorry to post on your forum, but I saw this & felt I had to reply.

Until you have been in the position yourself -- and if you followed the thread, you obviously know some of what happened...and not all of it was posted on GC - -you canNOT understand what it feels like to be "related" to such a person.

For you to say that I have wasted MY time, when what I've done as protecting the integrity of my sorority's name, is insulting.

I don't verify each & every person who posts here on GC. But yes, I do it for my Kappa Delta yahoogroup. Why? Because that's MY policy. And yes...I DO have the time for it.

Just as the same way you have time to start a thread here, yapping about how those KDs - and our panhellenic sisters - are so lame & need to feel better about themselves.

That's NOT classy. That's catty.

I hope no other sorority has to deal with a perp on GC (or anywhere else online), esp. one who draws attention to herself & the sorority in an unflattering way - but it will happen. WHEN someone says something to make you doubt her membership, as this person did both publicly & privately, then I hope you will trsut your gut as I did, and do what you feel is right. You can sit back & let her tarnish your letters or you can take action.

To those of you who posted here (certainly you are not representing the views of all of SK): perhaps some day you will see beyond your letters & realize that when one "sorority girl" acts inappropriately, it affects all of us.

Relax kdonline, I wasn't referring to any particular person or thread. I didn't read any of it & I don't plan on it.


Oh and I addressed this issue in my previous post:

It's one thing to not agree with people and what they may be doing, it's another thing to take it to a level of insults and name calling. You said you're not referring to any particular person or thread, but this has been the main circus that's been going on. Maybe if you had read some of it you might realize why it was done.

But again, there's absolutely no reason to name call or toss around insults, even if it is in general.

Generalizations are usually not the safest route to go anyway, but I'm a very straight forward & blunt person & rarely think twice about what I say before I say it. I meant no harm to any particular person or organization but I see how some might take my words personally. I apologize if I've offended anyone for any reason, but I still hold to my opinion.

I'd like everyone to take a step back & reread what I originally posted. I never said that KD's were wasting their time & I never said that it was stupid for them to do so. I asked what SK's would do if we found a perp among us. That's it.
People have posted their opinions. I don't understand why everyone is rushing to start pissing matches about this. Yes it's terrible that someone would do this but life goes on. My life does not revolve around SK or GC. Would I take the time to verify a person whom I suspected to be fake? I don't know b/c it hasn't happened but I would be appreciative that someone would care enough to take the initiative & find out.
This thread was never meant to poke fun or insult any members of any GLO's. It was meant to ask what we as an online community would do if we found a perp in our midst.

I agree ... the post wasn't made to ask people to judge what others have done and then agure over if it was right or not.

and EVERYONE (yes and I do mean everyone I am not directing this to anyone) should chill and not feel like they need to defend themselves because no one is being attacked ... and if you feel like you are ... don't post on this thread (note I said this thred not don't post at all or go away we hate you)

You are correct, someone who already is a Sigma Kappa wouldn't stoop that low. She doesn't need to, she's already a member.

HOWEVER................

Someone perping isn't a Sigma Kappa, that's the point. Therefore she doesn't fall into the category you listed so she probably would stoop that low.

Yeah. You're right on that count so I do stand corrected.

I did think it would have been funny if KDLady00 had turned out to be a 40-year-old truck driver named Steve.
