Do animals deserve the same respect as black people?

That's the question posed in an online exhibit by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The exhibit pairs a slave auction with a cattle auction, two hanging black men with a hanging steer, herded Native Americans with herded cattle, a burning black man with a burning chicken, a shackled black ankle with a chained elephant hoof, and a pygmy in a zoo with a monkey in a dress.

The introduction includes a quote from Alice Walker that says animals "were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites." A quote from Peter Singer says the suffering of enslaved animals "can only be compared with that which resulted from the centuries of tyranny by white humans over black humans."

PETA had a similar campaign in 2003. They compared the suffering of Jews during the Holocaust to the suffering of animals. It was called "Holocaust on your plate" ( think). They actually apologized for that one.

I don't condone cruelty to animals, but I don't think the Holocaust and slavery are fair comparisons.

NOTHING could be more horrible or IMO as horrible as the Holocost OR slavery of any kind. To compare the eating of an animal to the torture and de-humanizing of people is ignorant and insulting. I do not condone killing or torturing ANYTHING for fun. But I do think there is a BIG difference when we are talking the food chain.

end rant

Whoa... I can't believe that.

I remember hearing about this. They lost so much respect from me:rolleyes:

A sad commentary of man's inhumanity to man and animal. However, slavery, or the holocaust can not be attributed to animals. Though man shows his animalistic nature in both.

WTF! I agree with you on the loss of respect. Some jackasses don't think before they speak!

Not surprised.

Animal rights activitists are often eccentric and radical idiots.

Who remembers on Surreal Life when Tracy Bingham compared eating meat to eating Vanilla Ice's kid? "turkeys have children and parents, too!!!"

LOL.

I never respected PETA.

They are out of their gourds. Peta has always been pretty ridiculous.

Very sad and depressing.

I just read somewhere yesterday that, after careful deliberation, PETA will resume its exhibition/campaign.

I think I will go have a steak today.
