White Water Rafting

Has anyone ever been?

God its amazing. I just did a class five river yesterday ( the Penobscot in Millinocket, ME ) and had the greatest time ever. It was kinda scary at first but once you got on those rapids...Maaaan. I did a class 3 & 4 the day before ( The Kennebeck, in West Forks, ME ) but "The Nob" was way more fun. Our guide Mike was the best and kept bringing us into the rapids to surf, then tried to dump us all on the last one...but we outsmarted him. Muhaha.

Anyone else have experiences?

I rafted on both of those rivers back in '83 and loved every second of it! One of the best things I ever did.

I've been on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming -- that was a lot of fun.

I would love to go on the Colorado River. I remember when we went to the Grand Canyon, every five minutes or so we'd see another raft go by.

The last (and only) time I went white water rafting was my h.s senior retreat. I can't swim very well and the guide kept trying to push me out of the raft because I "wasn't wet enough." During a straight stretch, it took all I had not to swim to the shore and refuse to get back in. I also took someone's knee out while diving for the middle of the raft in a very nasty rapid.

Is there such a thing as rafting for wussies? I'd like to try it, but I'm really terrible when it comes to activities that could possibly result in injury.

Well I know the people at Three Rivers in NH run a thing called a float trip where really you just spend the day floating down the calm parts of the Kennebeck, but honestly...I was scared shitless the first time I went down the class 3 & 4 river...but it wasnt that bad. Just hold on when they tell you too, and wear a helmet if you want as well.

Very fun. I've done up to class 3 &4 stuff (rafts). In this part of the country, there is not much in the way of whitewater though. We do have canoes, but they are very, very slow.

Class 1/2.

I've been white water rafting twice - once on the Nenana River in Alaska (class 4 rapids), and once in Wyoming.

When I was in Alaska, I was 13 and traveling with my parents. The group that ran the rafting trip offered two options: a scenic float down a section of the river that had no rapids, or going through the rapids. We had opted for the float because my mother can't swim. On the day of, the group leader surprised us by saying they wouldn't do the float because there were only 3 of us and they wanted a minimum of 4, and did we want to do the white water trip instead? My dad and I jumped at the chance, while my mom took a refund and took a walk instead. OMG that trip was so much fun. :)

I need to go rafting again. :)
