big sis/ lil bro & Big bro/ lil sis

Hey i kinda brought up this topic on another thread , but i was wondering if anyone else did this, we have a tradition in our school that when you are a pledge every guy gets a Big Sis from one of the sororities, it not a ritual thing it's informal and it actually leads to very close friendships..... im a Sigma Chi and my Big sis is a Delta Zeta ... I have a lil sis too .... its kinda the same deal for girls but not all of them have big bros cause there are just way more sororitiy girls on our campus ... i was wondering if anyone else has this concept or just your thoughts or questions on the subject .. i personally love the idea it kinda brings one more into the greek community and builds deep friendships..

We didn't have that. Some of us had friends in sororities who would have us look after their little sister and introduce her to fraternity life at the school, which was kind of a big brother program. There wasn't anything official about it though, and the practice wasn't especially widespread.

We had a very infomral thing like that.

For instance I became very close to a sig ep after one of their brothers died. So I asked him to be my big bro. We exchanged paddles and everything. But it's totally informal. After 6 years he and I are still really REALLY close. I also hooked him up with one of my sisters and they are getting married next year.

I took a little brother too, it was someone that I liked, he's a good kid and I think a lot of him. We were chatting and he was telling me how he looked up to me. So we just decided he could be my little bro.

Funny thing about my school when I was there- you can have a big sis AND an adopted big sis or a big bro and an adopted big bro. It gets confusing.

At one time my big sister (AGD) had a little brother named Chad (Sig EP) who became my boyfriend. That means I was dating my fraternity/sorority brother.

I was a "Little Sister of the Shield" in Phi Delta Theta. When I was in college, most fraternities at the University of Florida had formal Little Sister organizations.

We went through "little sister rush," received bids, and had initiation (which the older sisters ran in conjunction with the brothers). We had our own handshakes, signs, etc.

It was a wonderful program. It gave women who had no exposure to the Greek system a sample taste of Greek life. They often got interested, and then went through sorority rush.

My "big brother" was wonderful. He was an engineering student, and helped me with math (which I'm lousy at!) Another brother got me one of my first interviews in broadcasting with his father's TV station after I graduated.

We ate dinner with the brothers once a week, had "lil sis" jerseys, lil sis composites, were invited to all of their social functions, etc. It cost us nothing, and none of the functions were mandatory. We were treated like gold.

I was sorry to hear these types of programs are no longer allowed. I consider myself extremely lucky that I got to be a part of something wonderful that is no longer in existance.

I have never heard of that, but it sounds rather interesting
