Anti-Hazing Week Sept 26-30
My Chapter is celebrating Anti-Hazing week, Sept 26-30. We will have had our New Members for about two weeks. Anyone have any ideas of what we could do/discuss at a programming chapter besides "Hooray, we don't haze!"? Thanks so much!

Split into randomly paired groups. Each is given a list of scenarios and must discuss "Is it hazing or isn't it?"
Then go over the list with the entire chapter and get their feedback. Show the video "Friendly Fire"-- your Director of Greek Life should have this. Discuss how hazing hurts. Discuss why some feel hazing helps-- and how you can turn those behaviors you wish to develop from those taboo activities into behaviors and loyalty you can develop from sisterhood activities that fall within the letters of the law. Review the university honor code, local, state and federal hazing law, as well as your sorority's policy on hazing. What are the penalties? Make a button in the shape of the universal no (A Circle with a line drawn through it) and the word "hazing" inside. Encourage the entire membership to wear this button all week to promote tolerance and to discourage hazing practices--- all members should wear it, not just a singled out group of members. Involve your adviser and Greek Life Director in the planning. they may have great ideas. |

Excellent advice! Always include School Adms. on this. It is great PR for one thing. If they feel that they are included, then they will look a lot more kindly on Your Org. Find out What Your IHQ guidelines are and go from there. Group discussions around them. While it may seem silly or mundane to you and your local members, there are reasons for the rules to be set into place. Please Keep Us updated so your experience can be spread to all of us.:) |
Find out if your Student Life/Greek life office has the latest update mailing from NPC; included in the latest update was a packet of information on National Hazing Prevention Week. The packet has programming ideas, how to include various offices/orgs on campus in the programming, resources to use in planning your events, and tips on how to evaluate your campus' (and chapters') hazing policies and processes for dealing with hazing issues.
Our campus does not start class until Sept. 29, so the current plan is to do the event programming with ANGLE and our Student Athlete Mentors as well as all 3 greek councils and specific staff members, during NHPW. Hopefully we'll have some sort of Greek 101 planned for after recruitment/intake for our greek orgs as well as our campus athletes. |
Get your local lawyer and/or judge alumni to participate. Get him or her to discuss the financial repercussion of hazing lawsuits.

Sounds good to me!
