2. Cheeseburger – 1,000 calories, 68 grams of fat (IFYHOO)
The menu at our house almost daily included four goodies: cheeseburgers, fries, fried chicken, and lasagna. I suspect they're still on the menus today.
---------------------- Speaking of beef, Forbes magazine just published a list of the 12 “best (worst) foods,” i.e., dishes that are yummy but bad for our health. Guess what? Steak doesn’t make the list. And although the cheeseburger is on the list, it’s not No. 1. Here are the top 10: 1. Eggs Benedict – 1,000 calories, 72 grams of fat (if you have only one, or “IFYHOO”) 2. Cheeseburger – 1,000 calories, 68 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 3. Duck confit – 1,000 calories, 60 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 4. Cheese fondue – 1,300 calories, 50 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 5. Fettuccine Alfredo – 500 calories, 40 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 6. French fries – 600 to 1,000 calories, 30 to 50 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 7. Foie gras – 400 calories, 35 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 8. Chicken hash – 400 calories, 35 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 9. Fried chicken – 400 calories, 30 grams of fat (IFYHOO) 10. Lasagna – 500 calories, 30 grams of fat (IFYHOO) Aside from odd choices like chicken hash (what’s that?), two things stand out here. One is that the widely vilified, so-called American “junk food” is represented by only two items on the list – cheeseburger and French fries – and one of those items, French fries, is not American at all, but Belgian by origin and common throughout Europe. The other thing we note is that at least six of these dishes are European concoctions served in upscale restaurants of Europe and North America. In other words, American “junk food” is in pretty distinguished company. Bon appetit! (And eat sensibly.) |
That's funny - as I mentioned in another thread, I've had a couple of "Godzilla meals" in the past week from a deli/burger joint near my place, well-known for its huge portions. The meal consists of two half pound patties, four slices of cheese along with a pound of onion rings or fries. I suspect that passes the 1000 calorie mark within the first few bites.
I enjoy quite a few dishes on the list - on the other hand, I work out quite a bit, and none of the eating has had an effect on my health (good cholesterol, blood pressure and weight) so I don't feel bad at all. |

Was there any more specific information on serving sizes? For instance, how big is the patty on the cheeseburger, and how much cheese? Any lettuce, tomato, ketchup? Even nutrition labels are deceptive. A 20-oz bottle of soda looks a lot worse nutritionally when you realize that the "servings per container" is 2.5, not 1. Who stops drinking when they've consumed only 40% of the soda? |
But it is soooooo good to eat it...
(yes, in the Schfifty-fife voice) ...but that info is also why I rarely eat burgers and fries and the like. |
i can tell it's early in the day...it all sounds good.
chicken hash is like beef hash. as i understand, it's a little bit of everything and a lot of potatoes. |

Two of my favorite foods are on that list...foie gras and eggs benedict. Oh, and cheese fondue - I like that, too. :)
