Locals still going strong

I'm an alumni member of Alpha Kappa Phi Sorority (Agonian). This is a regional sorority thru the New York college system. In 1957 NYS put a ban on national fraternity/sorority organizations, so all these groups had to cut ties with their national affiliation. The ban was lifted in eth early 1980s. Many local/regional groups still thrive at these campuses all over NYS. Many of these regional or locals do have more than one chapter and usually hold conventions to talk about tradtions, history etc. Many of them have websites, ours is http://organizations.oneonta.edu/sorority/akphi/ which has links to our other chapters.:) [B][COLOR=blue]

I am a member of Tau Delta sorority, est. 1921 (or 1915 as Tomo Dachi) at Otterbein College. All of our sororities (6 possibly 7 this year) are local, and all are over 70 years old. There's never been a national affiliation. It's nice to hear that locals are surviving and even thriving. You guys once had a chapter at IUP, which is very cool because I spent a lot of time at that school.

I think we were at IUP...but we are not sure. The only problem with locals is that we have trouble keeping tabs on rituals and history and when chapters fold. We were formally established in 1885, but since then chapters have come and gone. If you have any info about AKPHI at IUP could you send it to me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I second that on the Alpha Kappa Phi badge! Lovely! :)

I saw an Alpha Kappa Phi badge on ebay a while back and tried to find out more about the sorority (as the badge looks much like my beloved Delta Gamma badge! :) ). I'm so glad you posted the link to the web page! I think it's neat that we share the anchor symbol! :)

JitrBug,
I think it is so cool that a local/regional founded in the 1880's is still going strong.
I went to the Oneonta site and clicked on the part about heritage...there was speculation about the translation of your open motto (ponoumen agein). I went to the Perseus Word Study Tool (on the Tufts University Site) and found out that you can enter transliterated Greek terms and get English translations. "Ponoumen" is from "poneo"="to work hard, do work, toil. "Agein" is from "ago"=to lead, carry, bring. Thus, "we strive to lead" (as quoted on one of the Agonian chapter sites) would be correct.

I must say I think it's very cool that your Beta chapter was founded on April 4th becasue that's my birthday!

But in all seriousness, it's awesome that a local is going strong soo long after it's founding :)
