Uninvited Pennsylvania Lt. Governor campaigns at a funeral.

Marine's family upset official came to funeral

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Written apologies will be sent to the family of a dead Marine who was upset that the lieutenant governor appeared uninvited at his funeral last week, Gov. Ed Rendell said.

Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll went to the July 19 funeral of Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich, passed out her business card and made a remark about the state government being against the war, family members said.

"Whether you're for the war or against the war, to say something like that to a relative of someone who just died in combat was just repulsive," said Goodrich's sister-in-law Rhonda Goodrich.

Catherine Baker Knoll is my grandmother's first cousin... so whatever relation that makes her to me... 3rd cousin I guess or something like that. I haven't seen her since I was about 11 at a family reunion. Don't really know her or anything...wish I did, could've helped me get some cushy jobs.

I saw this story on the news last night (My apartment complex looks down on Carnegie, literally [sometimes figuratively, too, lol] and I drive through it every day). It doesn't really make sense and we keep on hearing different things. I do think the family is sorta overreacting. They didn't seem to sincerely upset in the interviews that I saw on TV last night and today. It seems like they're trying to get something out of it. They didn't even seem all that grief-stricken, compared with the soldier's families that you usually seem on the news. Just seems shady to me.

I don't think what she did was entirely appropriate nor did it make a lot of sense... she is pretty up there (I believe upper 70's, probably almost 80 years old) in the years and has been involved in politics for a very long time. She was state treasurer for a number of years.

She's that old? Gosh she looks good for age. CNN had a pic of her and I would never guessed that she was that old.

That would make her your first cousin twice removed.

Third cousins are lateral; cousins removed are how every many generations down the lineage you are but staying at the same relation.

she's had to have had some work done... I think she looks better now than she did when I was a kid

Ah, you beat me to it! ;)

CBK has to be at least 84-85, by our reckoning. One of my Phi Mu friends has been working for her for 20 years, and she was in her 60's then. I'd LOVE to know who her doctor is - you really can't tell that she's "new and improved"!

As for what she did, well, I'm against politicians who aren't friends of the family being at ANY funeral - it's just tacky. I've always heard such nice things about her prior to this - but this was a nasty faux pas.

Just looked it up, she's 74. Not as old as I thought, but she still HAS to have had some work done

read a bit more this morning (trying to kill some time and keep my mind off the law!)... and the person who's complaining is the deceased's sister in law. Not his actual family!

She's also somewhat politically active... she talked about being a reigstered Republican and having protested when Michael Moore was in town.

Also, from what everything says, she's trying to make it out like CBK was passing out business cards right and left, but all of the stories say it was one card passed to the family.
