Tight Curls or Silky Straight??

Hello all!! I have to do a news article for a journalism class and I need your help. A lot of sisters either choose to wear their hair natural or some choose to go to the salon every 6 weeks and have their hair relaxed...some do it for the convenience, the look, or some may say, trying to emulate European standards of beauty.
What is your opinion??
I'm looking for anyone who has chose to go either route, why you chose that route and your opinions on women who chose to do the opposite of your choice. Also, any comments on the subject as well. My article is due Friday, so, if you like, you may respond to me privately on email at misskriss01@hotmail.com or we can start a discussion right here in the forum!!

Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to your comments!

Hi MissKriss!!

One thing I love about my hair is it's versatility!! I think I have the thickest, nappiest hair on this planet and I LOVE it in it's natural state. However, I don't always wear it that way. I do this every 3-4 years -- I let the perm grow out and "deal with it". I love all kinds of hair styles and will perm it again and again and never miss my 6 week appointment. Then I want to come back "HOME" and wear it in it's natural state again. I have been doing this since 1983 so I've been through the "curl" AND EVERYTHING!! (Oh shoot I've told my age!!)

Well right now I think whatever works for you http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif But I have to admit that wearing my hair natural takes time because I can't just slap some product on it and bump my ends under.

Well, I am definitely one of those sisters that choose to get their hair permed. My hair is short-Halle Berry type of short and it obviously looks better permed. I have thought about going the "natural" route. Not to get in touch with my African American roots. Because everytime I look in the mirror, I know I am black-regardless of my hair texture. I LOVE being black and I in no way feel that by perming my hair I am trying to be more Euorpean. Hell, I put weaves in my hair and get my nails done. I try what styles look good on me. I in no way have the desire to be European.

Well to answer your question...I prefer both. Every three or four months I'll grow my hair out then cut it all off. When my hair is extremely short (think pencil lead short...I keep it natural and use leave-in conditioner makes it look like a texturizer.)

But when I grow it out...I get perms. Unfortunately, (although my friends say I'm fortunate I get my hair from my father- chickasaw and choctaw.) He has naturally wavy hair and he perms his to get it straight. I have weird hair...half curly and wavy. Perms really damage my hair and only last two weeks or three at the max before I out grow them.

But having natural hair doesn't have anything to do with getting back with my roots. It's just that with short hair I can get up wash it and go...rather than mess around with straightening curling irons.

well i have fairly long hair and i love to let it hang. therefore i choose to perm it whenever needed. this is not emulate european standard. ijust think this style looks cuter on me than a natural.

Squeky, I am feeling you exactly. My hair is curly/wavy and when I do put in a perm its to get the curliness out. But right now my hair is about a inch long all around andI just wash it everyday and through some conditioner and a tad bit of gel in it. It is so much easier than any hairstyle I've ever had.

I might let my hair grow out and I might get a perm, but I never got a perm to look or be white. It was mianly just because my hair is soo curly that it gets frizzy really easy and with out a perm I find myself with this big bush by the end of the day when it is humid outside. And when I o to a club, I look rediculous after I start sweating.

Right now though I'm really feeling this short look and I finally ddidn't get carded once http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif So I might keep it for a while

I know it might be too late for the assignment, but here are my 2 cents anyway.

TO EACH, THEIR OWN...

simple as that.

God bless everyone!

I believe that black women have been socially conditioned to want straight hair, which is why I no longer straighten mine. I'm nine months into the locking process and will reach my third nappaversary on April 27th! :)

However, I believe that others should do as they wish with their own hair.
