Grammy Winner Luther Vandross Dies at 54
By NEKESA MUMBI MOODY, AP Music Writer 1 minute ago Grammy award winner Luther Vandross, whose deep, lush voice on hits like "Here and Now" and "Any Love" sold more than 25 million albums while providing the romantic backdrop for millions of couples worldwide, died Friday. He was 54. Vandross died at 1:47 p.m. at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, N.J., said hospital spokesman Rob Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh did not release the cause of death. Since suffering a stroke in his Manhattan home on April 16, 2003, the R&B crooner stopped making public appearances — but amazingly managed to continue his recording career. In 2004, he captured four Grammys as a sentimental favorite, including best song for the bittersweet "Dance With My Father." |

He was an amazing singer. What a big loss to the music world. |
:( How terrible! I just now heard.
|
Random Luther fact: He used to sing backup for David Bowie, and you can hear him prominently on "Young Americans." If you have seen footage of Bowie in the Dick Cavett show, Luther was in the background there.

I was on I-5 heading north and thanking my lucky stars that I was in Bumf*ck, WA with very few cars on the road. I heard it on the news and all I remember is me screaming
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I am beyond heartbroken! I remember seeing him live at Wolf Trap Farm Park right outside DC. I remember having my first slow dance to "Superstar". I remember wearing out "The Night I Fell in Love" CD...the song "Wait for Love" was the shit! Getting married I wanted my wedding song to be "Here and Now". The music world has lost one hell of a singer! :( Quote:
