For the Jennifer's....a question?

So if you go by the nickname Jen, or Jenn, to shorten Jennifer. Do people ever ask you, "Gin? Like the drink?"

Because here lately everytime I introduce myself thats what people say. "Gin? Like that drink. That's so cool."

I want to say "yes, like the drink. My mom was a drunk and here I am."

Does anyone else get this or is it just me?

My name is Jennis. It's James and Dennis squished together and pronouned like "tennis" but with a "J." At least 90% of the people I meet end up calling me Jennifer, then Jenny, then Jen.

I don't really get asked the "Gin" question, but some idiots do occasionally ask me, "Why didn't your parents just name you Jennifer?" The best response that I can't say back of course is "Why didn't your parents stop before you were conceived?"

I'm not a Jennifer - but I'm confused... I pronounce "Gin" and "Jen or Jenn" differently - is that not correct, or not how you pronounce them?

A lot of people don't make a distinction. When I introduce myself, I say "jEHnis" but people (those who say it right) usually say "jInis" with a short "i."

Plus, in Georgia, it's a nightmare because I also get "jEEE inis" heavy on the southern drawl. LOL!

Jennis--that's a nice name. I wouldn't shorten it. But how many people call you Janice?

:) Thanks -- my SN is my version of the phonetic pronunciation of my name in French -- my dad is French. I've used that SN for a LONG time. That's the only time I shorten my name.

People call me:

Janice (jaa-nis)
Jenice (jeh-niece)
Jennifer
Jenny
Jen
Jan
Genesis

My ex-boyfriend's little sister couldn't say my name, so she called me "Jennet" and when my brother was a baby, he couldn't figure out my name at all, so he called me "Sisu."

And my family calls me "J" for the most part. Sometimes "J Girl," sometimes "JC" and my mom calls me "Jacob" because my initials are JCB.

My mother once worked as a french translator for the government and she wanted to name me Cheri (my dear, with the french pronunciation.) But she figured everyone would butcher my name so she named me Sharon instead. However, my middle name is Jeanette, which she wanted pronounced as jahnnette, but of course that didn't happen either. :D

People get Pen and Pin mixed up sometimes too. I would suppose it would be the same type of mistake.

Those of us born in the 70s probably remember having multiple Jennifers in our classes. I always had at least two or three in my classes. When I participated in my local Junior Miss competition, there were four Jennifers out of the 16 contestants that year. (They went by Jen, Jenn, Jennifer and Jennifer, no Jennys.)

Useless info: there has never been a Jennifer on The Real World or Road Rules. Go figure.

My name is Jessica and a lot of people call me Jennifer and I can't figure out why... I don't think I pronounce Jessica, Jennifer?!?!

There were 3 Jen.... girls in my pledge class. Jen J.; Jenn Smith, and Jennifer H.

I used to work as a receptionist and I would get all sorts of combos:

I've been:
Jen
Jenny
Jeni
Jennifer
Jenn
Janet
Joan
Janice
Jan
Jin
Jon (which was weird because that was my boss' name and people on the other line would get all confused.)
Jen-i (pronounced Jen-eye.)

I stick to Jen but people call me all sorts of crap.

RedRoseSAI 06-28-2005 11:36 AM

I've never been mistaken for gin. :)

I tend to use "Jennifer" for business (especially over the phone..."Jen" can sound like "John") but I'm Jen to all my friends.

I've always loved the name Jennifer. I used to name all my dolls Jenny when I was a little girl haha

CougADPi 06-28-2005 02:23 PM

When I joined my chapter I was told I had to be Jennifer because they already had a Jen and a Jenny. I was used to being Jen, so that was a change. When the other Jen graduated I thought I had my chance, but that fall we got an Alpha who went by Jen. She ended up being my little...actually, now that I think about it, all of us Jen-types were in the same family!
