Hating Somebody That You Do Not Know

So, I've read in many places people talking about how much they hate this actor, player, historical figure, etc. My question is, can you really hate somebody that you have no formal contact other than knowing who he or she is?

Sistermadly 06-22-2005 09:58 AM

Because we live in a world of hyperbole and intellectual shorthand. Saying you 'hate' someone is easier than saying "I don't like this person's acting style", or "I don't like the way this person is represented in the media, and his/her positions on Tibet", etc.

I deal with a lot of people over the phone at work (ie. other Social Workers, doctors, family members, etc.) who I've never met but because of how they present themselves on the phone causes me to have a great deal of dislike towards them. Hate is a strong word though.

Suddenly, I'm glad that I was never allowed to use the word "hate" since I was a child!

I do dislike some people I don't know, though, mostly due to their attitudes.

And since this is a Greek message board, y'all will understand this: we had one sister who would loathe or detest people, and had this silly little song about it that I will probably have in my head the rest of the day now!

i've always loved it when people i do not know hate me...or tell people they hate me...cos that is kind of flattering. my favorite was when someone's gf (i didn't know him) had a crush on me so he threatened to beat me up.

this was a long time ago...but i was reminded of it because I'd like to think I am a very nice guy & someone recently told me that some guy in college last year had said he hated me because he thought his gf had a crush on me...

i sound arrogant...let me clear the air...they both had gfs and i can't seem to find one..

I am a seething cesspool of hatred, so I hate people I don't know all the time. Just being honest.

ETA: I rarely hate celebrities. I mostly reserve it for people I know OF, but don't know well.

I am generally too self absorbed to dislike people that haven't actually crossed me. Also, I tend to avoid people that annoy me.

I have no recollection of disliking someone completely out of my life with any type of real emotional intensity.

I confess, I'm bad about this very thing.

HATE

What a terrible thing!

I do dislike some people but I have to deal with them, either on GC or Customers at My Store.

Very Few on GC, but many oat the Store.

Grin and say thank you very much, have a nice day!

After they leave, I just think F*cking Moroon!

Very true. Hate has 2 meanings anyway:

1. To feel hostility or animosity toward.
2. To feel dislike or distaste for

You just have to realize which one people mean. I mean, you might "hate" asparagus, but when's the last time you had animosity toward one?

I truly wish I could cosign on that. Unfortunately, I haven't always been that big of a person, but I am trying to work on it.

I don't think I am a big person, I just tend not to dwell on stuff or people that much. I am also pretty detached so I don't invest a lot of myself in say . . my opinion. If you agree fine, if you disagree I don't feel threatened.

Yeah, and I am trying to learn that just because someone thinks differently than I do that's they aren't necessarily trying to attack me personally.

I do not recall hating someone I don't even know. Actually, I cannot even comprehend it. How can you even hate someone who you know NOTHING about? For those who do hate people they don't know...what is it that you hate about them?

I'm pretty much a victim of this sort of thing. :(

ShaedyKD 06-26-2005 09:32 PM

I hate Bobby, and I don't know him...so yes, it is possible to hate someone you don't know.
