Dorm pet
 

I need to find a pet that is small enough to hide in a dorm. But the problem is that I can't take it on the plane with me, so I need something that'll die in 8 months or less. I wanted a beta fish, but they can live for 2 years, so that's out. But I don't want something that'll die in 2 days, like a goldfish. Any ideas?

I heard Beta die after 8 months when flushed down a toilet.

lol, you're the one who wants something that'll die within 8 months. Maybe a housefly? Can't think of any pets that have that short of a life span. And there are reasons why you're not allowed to have pets in dorms... so can't you just visit home or an animal shelter when you need a pet fix?

Hey it worked for me. Volunteering there is cool too. You can play with animals all you want for two hours or so and then you don't have to deal with them at home.

Of course now I want one.

Hey... I had a roommate that had a goldfish that lasted longer than two days. I've got one at home that has been around since my elementary school carnivals... when I was in elementary school. I think it's some sort of super fish.

Fish tended to be the popular choice if you absolutely wanted a pet in the dorms. But if you are already setting a time limit on its life before you own it, perhaps you are not ready for a pet.

When our daughter was away at school and missed "her" kittys, she volunteered at a local shelter. She went in a day or two a week for an hour or so and just petted (is that a word, it doesn't look right) the cats on her lap.

She loved it, and so did the cats.

There was a brief time that a bunch of my friends all had betas. They'd have beta fighting tournements. Drop two betas into the tank, let 'em go at it until one shows to be more dominant, then declare a winner (don't think one ever died).

As for dorm pets, someone once told me that Oklahoma State had some kind of rule that said that you couldn't have any pet that couldn't survive being underwater for 3 minutes.

Try a turtle, frog, or a toad-If you have to rid of yet you can always let in go at a park.

I used to have some betas that lasted almost 7 years & they had just been passed around a whole bunch. Started off in a college dorm room, passed on to another girl in the dorm who happened to be my next door neighbor, who eventually passed them on to my sister & then my parents.

You could care for a beta & then pass it on! But I tend to agree that if you're just looking for a pet with a short life span maybe you are not fully ready to care for a pet yet.

I remember one time in summer camp, we're all walking in a field and hear squishing noises along with ribbits.

You can guess what happened there.

Some little snot wouldn't stop crying and I bet he wears pantyhose on his face and kills people.

Get a Furby. You can take it with you, and you can turn it off when you want.

Seriously, if you aren't going to be able to care for a pet over vacations, etc., then don't get one. It's cruel to get a pet and then leave it alone on breaks and wish for it to die.

I don't want to leave it on a break, that's why I thought if I got one with a short life span (and it would die of natural causes), then I could give it a respectable burial before I go home. But I do love that idea about the frog I love frogs! And my old roomate has 2 betas, I bet she'd take care of it for me over the summer, I didn't think of her. Thanks guys!

Anyway, I already have a volunteer commitment with a homeless shelter, I don't have time to go to an animal shelter. But after I graduate, I'm getting a ferret!

If you are afraid, get a stuffed pet!

Hate to say it, but if you asked this question, You do not need a Dorm Pet.

Bad idea. It can severely mess with the local ecosystem. Releasing pets is illegal in many states.
