Schools

What do you all think of the problems faced by current inner city school children, i.e. inadequate funding, untrained teachers, etc.... Do you think that vouchers, which is the solution suggested by Bush--and most Republicans--are the answer. Or do you think that it the improvements should be made within the current school system?

The US school districts are in dire need of teachers and they are sacrificing the quality of education because of it.

Now they just require folks to have a bachelors degree and that's it (no credentials, no work experience, ANY kind of major...)

My sands is upset about the whole thing cause she feels this degrades her profession. She has her credentials and just got her master's last week and it seems like ANYONE can be a teacher. And what makes it even worse is that most people that are taking these "emergency" teaching gigs, are not really about the kids....they just need a decent paying job.

I'm not sure what can solve this problem (since this is not my field of expertise, and I dont have any kids), but something definately needs to happen - and soon.

i feel like one of the major problems deals with some teachers' expectations for our children. i have witnessed teachers who did not try to the best of their ability to teach children because they felt it was " no use" there are some teachers who will go all out but then u have so many stipulations that a teacher can only do so much. so what is my point? i don't know. i just wanted to say something! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Well, I want to post my opinion now that I have given others an opportunity to respond. I think that every child should have the right to a good education within their own neighbohood. Children should not have to go out into the unfamiliar in order to learn, those opportunities should be available in their neighbohoods. If we persist in this idea that it is impossible to create a decent education system in the inner city, then it will remain impossible to create a decent system of education in the inner city. Besides if many parent opted for this voucher option, we would probably begin to see some of the same problems prevalent in innercity schools , i.e. overcrowding, underfunded programs, too large classrooms, appearing in these other schools. So I think that to abandon the current system is the wrong way to handle this dilemna.
