Zeta Phi Beta to observe 85th anniversary with weekend of celebration, community outreach

Event marks return to Washington birthplace for third largest African-American women’s service organization and reopening of renovated headquarters

WASHINGTON--More than 2,000 members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, their families and friends will observe the 85th anniversary of the organization's founding on July 21-24, 2005 during a four-day celebration at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, D.C.
The event theme, "Advancing Our House By the Side of the Road", recognizes the completion of a $2 million, nine-month renovation of the organization’s international headquarters.

Members of the Sorority and various local and national dignitaries will be on hand July 23 for a gala to mark the rededication of the headquarters and the grand opening of the Zeta Museum, which will feature wax figurines and portraits of the Sorority’s founders. The museum is a collection of Sorority artifacts representing significant milestones in Zeta’s long history of service both in the United States and abroad.

In addition to the headquarters rededication, the nation’s third largest predominately African American women’s organization will host a weekend of activities including personal enrichment and economic empowerment workshops. Registered guests will be treated to a black-tie reception and several evenings of musical entertainment by renowned jazz and classical artists. Selected children from the District of Columbia will join the Zetas and guests at several of the evening performances.

One of the celebration highlights consists of a presentation to three Washington area organizations, Strive DC, Our Place DC, and the Community Action Group, that place women on the road to self-sufficiency. As part of the Sorority’s international service initiative, Zetas Helping Other People Excel commonly called Z-HOPE, Zeta women across the nation will donate slightly used and new business suits to the trio of non-profit orgs to assist area women seeking employment. The Sorority will also make a monetary donation to help them in their mission to empower lower-income and formerly incarcerated women.

“We will come to Washington, the birthplace of our Sorority, to reaffirm our belief in the collective responsibility we have as leaders, innovators and scholars to further the legacy of service started by the Sorority’s Founders at Howard University many years ago,” said Barbara C. Moore, 22nd International President. “This is a celebration of our auspicious past, our dynamic present, and of our commitment to remain a leading woman’s organization dedicated to helping improve the lives of people around the world.”

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded in 1920 in Washington, D.C., on the belief that the social nature of sorority life should not overshadow the real mission of progressive organizations—to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day.
The international organization's more than 125,000 initiated members and affiliates have given millions of voluntary hours to educate the public, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change.
Zeta Phi Beta has more than 800 chapters in the United States and abroad. In addition to its membership of college-educated woman, the Zeta Phi Beta umbrella includes Amicae (adult women), Archonettes (teen girls), Amicettes (pre-teen girls), Pearlettes (elementary age girls), and the Zeta Male Network auxiliaries.

Sororz,

I am just coming back from the Pacific Regional Conference and the Grand stated that an unveiling of a wax figure of MHF Myrtle Tyler Faithful will take place at the 85th.

If anyone goes plse, plse, plse PM me a photo of what the figure looks like. I wonder if our other 4 founders will be created in the future. This is enough to make any soror go!!

She also said that the Zeta sign that is in the doorway will be maximized to say Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in an arch like shape.:) :) Can't wait to see it!

Hey everyone....

Although I was just "hanging out" at the celebration, I got to meet sooooo many Zetas that I had known from online! Too many to list here... I just wanted to publicly say THANK YOU to everyone I met! You were all so warm, friendly, and hospitable.

Although I got to see Dorothy Height  and meet and talk to Sheryl Underwood   who said she'd read my novel :D I think the highlight of the weekend was when I met the daughter of one of your founders. (Actually, nobody told me her name, they just said founder's daughter and I was instantly like  "I'm not worthy!")

And the best part about that was not only how nice, friendly, and down to earth she was, but that she is married to an Alpha :D .

In fact, I saw a good amount of Alphas in the "Zeta Male Network."

I see how it is. ;) Y'all are cool with me!

As your celebration wraps up today, I hope everyone enjoyed DC and makes it home safely! Sorry for the weather :(. Next time, I'll try to arrange some more cool breezes.

I'm still pouting but sounds like everyone had/is having a blast. I wanna see pics!!

Representative Carson shares Zeta message in halls of Congress

In honor of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority 85th Anniversary Celebration, July 21-24 in Washington, D.C., Rep. Julia Carson, D-IN, and a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, read the following remarks into the Congressional record on July 20. The document can be viewed at the following url:

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/.../~r109l1924P::

************************************************** **********************
The SPEAKER pro tempore. Under a previous order of the House, the gentlewoman from Indiana (Ms. Carson) is recognized for 5 minutes.

Ms. CARSON. Mr. Speaker, as a proud member of one of the oldest black sororities in the United States, I rise today to honor and recognize Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, as it celebrates its 85th anniversary. Zeta was founded on January 16, 1920, by five students at Howard University, right here in our Nation's capital. A community-conscious action-oriented organization, Zeta Phi Beta has committed itself to uphold its founding principles of scholarship, service, sisterly love, and finer womanhood in over 700 communities around the world.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded on the belief that the social nature of sorority life should not overshadow the real mission of progressive organizations to address societal mores, ills, prejudice, poverty, and health concerns of the day.

Currently, under the direction of international president Barbara Moore, Zeta Phi Beta implements their national service program, Z-HOPE, which stands for Zetas Helping Other People Excel. Z-HOPE is a community outreach initiative in direct response to the Healthy People 2000 objectives established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Since the start of this initiative, Zeta women and their auxiliaries have touched the lives of thousands of men and women and children in more than 500 communities around the country.

Through their National Education Foundation, Zeta works with the Department of Energy to educate minority communities about the Human Genome Project. The foundation holds conferences across the Nation in both rural and urban areas.

Zeta Phi Beta also has a long-standing partnership with the March of Dimes to educate low-income mothers about prenatal care. Stork's Nest provides incentives to help pregnant women make and keep prenatal care appointments and teaches expectant parents about healthy prenatal and infant care practices. Over the past 2 years, more than 500,000 people participated in a program to raise the awareness of prematurity by taking the message to the African American and Latino churches.

In 2003, Zeta founded the Zeta Congressional Institute in efforts to increase the number of minority women who pursue careers as advocates and legislators. Zeta will encourage more minority women to pursue internships in congressional offices and executive agencies to gain firsthand knowledge of the political process.

For 85 years, the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has worked to address the problems that confront our communities. I am proud to celebrate this momentous occasion with the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta, and I welcome them to Washington as they return here to celebrate the anniversary and the place of their founding.

Again Zeta doing big things!!!

Soror Carson is an amazing woman...she is an amazing politician, advocate, woman, black woman, and soror...congrats to my sorors for their successful 85th. I was unable to attend but an ex roommate of mine from undergrad is married to a soror and they attended and he said he was thoroughly impressed. He was amongst those Alphas in the Zeta Male Network. LOL. Zeta continues to make the strides necessary to make it the tower of light and "house by the side of the road" they aspire to be. If you guys get a moment you can look at the "program" for the event on their website. Again congrats my sorors...Call on this brother if I can ever help your cause...
