A little help

My grandfather was a 1922 grad of USC School of Engineering. He was in a fraternity then and I have a watch chain of his with a fob on it from the fraternity. It is a U with an E and X in the middle. Does anyone have any info on the Fraternity?

Can you take a digital photo and post a picture?

Might be a Sigma and a Chi - not an S and X.

If it is a Sigma, contact the Sigma Chi headquarters in Evanston, IL, to confirm membership.

If it's truly an E, that might combine with the X to indicate Epsilon Chi chapter of some fratenity, or Epsilon Chi could be an engineering honor society.

hoosier - Good call.

cemilne - When you say your Grandfather was in a fraternity, do you know the fraternity or are going off the markings on the fob.

Why I ask is that the fob may represent an engineering society or GLO that he was a member of while an undergraduate. And not any specific social GLO.

There is an Omega Chi Epsilon Chemical Engineering Honor Society and a Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society, but neither of them conform to the date of 1922. Though, from what I can tell, both have/had chapters at USC. The Chi Epsilon key looks a little bit like an angular "U" with an X and E in the middle. Have a look at both of these images; do either of these keys look right?

It would really help if we had a photo of the item, or if you could give us a detailed description (eg. it's a triangle shaped fob with a big X and a sword passing through it, or something like that).

a little help

Thanks to all who replied. It is Chi Epsilon, my grandfather was a civil engineer. The ruby is missing from the top of the fob (Thanks Kelly). He did some survey work at USC after he graduated. He was quite proud of his association with USC, he even bought a tuxedo for the reunions. But this was a man who wore a suit and tie while surveying, and retired at the age of 75. Again, thank you to all who responded.

Sometimes called a "key". The device that originally was intended to be worn from a watch chain you would wear in your vest.

Now adays, may groups still make the keys, but they are often worn as pendants from a neck chain or the like.
