Part-Time/Commuter Membership Process
Good greetings to all:
I have recently become a student again after 6-7 years away from school for a variety of reasons. I work full-time, but also carry a full-time student's courseload (12 credits) and will continue to do so for the forseeable future, until graduation. The University I attend has a chapter of an organization that I am (and have been for a very long time) interested in joining. My question is, how many of you sought membership in your respective organization while not a full-time on-campus student? How many of you had fellow participants that were older than you (I'm 26, will be 27 in the Fall), and worked during the day? My age doesn't bother me, after all my understanding is that these organizations are for a lifetime, not 18-21. "Making time for it" doesn't bother me either; believe me if I can work 50-60 hours a week and still carry 3-4 classes a term (and I have for over a year now) I can find some time for this thing that I've wanted for so long. It's also important to me to make it as an undergraduate, as it will be several years more before I receive my degree and am eligible for graduate membership. If I need to drop a class or two, so be it. I'd just like to hear if any of you had or had heard of a similar experience. I've wanted this for so long that I'm not willing to give up on it. Thank you for your time. --J |
First, congratulations for returning to school. That is a big and important step you took and something you should be proud about doing. I know it is a hard thing to do after being away for awhile (I recently returned to school to seek another degree after a 4 year hiatus).
To answer your 1st question, I became a member of IOTA as a full-time traditional student. I know, however, of many IOTA men who were non-traditional students that joined the organization as non-traditional students and are/were quite active. IOTA has the unique history of being founded by 12 non-traditional students with jobs, families, and recently returning from military duty with all of this occurring during the Civil Rights Movement. I think it is important that you truly do some soul-searching before you seek membership in any organization to make sure that you truly have the time and desire to dedicate yourself to your membership on top of your other responsibilities. The timing of your quest for membership will also be important. "Dropping a class" should not be a priority....the organization that you wish to join will likely be there when the time is right. I wish you well in your quest for membership. Peace be onto you. |

Pursue your dream i pledged as a part time commuter and i was the oldest person online at 24 (I decided to go to the military after high school) but you can do it as long as want it. but like my man said school is the priority if its not the right time and your load is to heavy i suggest you hold off.
