Advice for a community service project
Hey y'all, I've been stuck on this for awhile and I can't think of a better group of women to ask. My community service org. is right now trying to think of projects to raise the literacy rate in our neighborhood. We tried to create our own program, but it failed, so now we are trying to get the whole org. involved in tutoring with an existing program, until we are firm enough to start our own. Does anyone have any ideas on extra activities that we can provide, other than tutoring services? Like, I had the idea to dress up on Halloween, but we'll be dressing up as Black achievers that really created opportunities for our people, but children may not be familiar with (Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Angela Davis, etc.) If anyone can think of anymore ideas, could you let me know? I'm trying to get a good range of them so when we come back in August, we'll have some projects to get going on. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks everybody!

You mean to tell me 69 of you looked at this, but nobody had anything? Oh come on, even if you don't like the idea, I'd appreciate anything at all. Even little things. Be creative!

WalMart, Target and Oprah sponsor different literacy programs. Check thier individual websites for more info.

It didn't seem like you were too responsive to help...

Oh hahaha, haha oh you're all so funny....
Come on you guys for real. I'd appreciate anybody's ideas. I don't need offers for anyone to come down and start the program for me, but advice and ideas, I'm good with. :-) So really, if no one's got anything, fine, but I'd like to hear them if you do. Honest.:-) |
you could start by going to shelters for women and their children, youth centers (the kinds that help young people get GEDs and jobs) and libraries. i'm POSITIVE that they will have something that you'll be able to do.

What org(group) is this? Just out of curiousity...
I, personally, would further investigate existing programs as those may have funding sources readily available or they may already have a guideline that would be in the range of what you guys are trying to begin. Activities to complete that proactively concerns literacy would heavily depend on the ages, race, socioeconomic background, what have you. Older AA adults is where I would focus. Be forwarned, this is a challenge, but is extremely rewarding. |
