New Department at work - not happy!
Ok, GCers, I need more advice!
TPTB have created a new department at work, and I'm now part of it. I was hired to work in communications and member services, but now I will also work in the payroll department, which means creating and stuffing checks for our 1,500 members. This isn't what I signed up for and I'm not happy about the change, I have no interest in payroll or accounting or taking on additional adminstrative duties. What should I do? Should I suck it up and deal or should I go to HR and explain my position? I don't think that would help, but it would make me feel better. But then they might tell me to leave, when I made a comment at the meeting to tell us about the change my new boss told me that if I chose to "stick my head in the sand" I'd be left behind. |
Jess,
Sounds like the asses here at my workplace. "Sticking your head in the sand?" What is it with usless workplace terms?? Unless they are upping your pay I would look for a new job. I have learned during my time here at BXLOU that I am smart and they are old foggies that won't listen to a word I have to say. If it will make you feel better, talk to HR. If they tell you that your position is staying the way it is and you hate it, get out the Sunday paper and start networking! Know that you are a smart, self-reliant person that doesn't deserve to be pushed around. I am 24 yrs old and they treat me like I am 18 here with no college education. I finally got a backbone and took my skills elsewhere. They are scrambling to find a replacement for me now, but I could care less if they find one. I am just glad to be starting a new job and I will be getting paid what I am worth. Just my 2 cents......good luck! |
I've been in a similar situation. My first job out of college started out great, until I was shifted into a job role that was boring and for which I was overqualified. I tried to shift back, to no avail. So I got myself a new job and got out.
If I were you, I would talk to the boss, talk to HR, and start sending out resumes and building your network, in parallel - don't wait for them to say no (or, worse, fire you) before you start looking. If you do get out of payroll, you can then choose whether to keep pursuing job leads or just stay put. Good luck! |
Jess -
Are they paying you more? If not, you definitely have a double beef. It isn't an additional duty for your job - it's payroll - that's a whole other job! Not only that but the phrase "sticking your head in the sand" has nothing to do with this situation. If they do tell you to leave, then you get to collect unemployment. |
