Saltwater fishing rod/reel

Well my boyfriend’s birthday is coming up so I want to buy him a new rod and reel. We are going to Emerald Isle for vacation this summer so I want something that will be good to fish off the pier. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, is this something that you would prefer to pick out or would appreciate not knowing? I hate giving away what I am going to get.

(I guess this is in the right forum… fishing is considered a sport right?)

Ahh my boyfriend fishes and it's all I hear about. He orders his from http://www.cabelas.com. I don't have any brand suggestions, but perusing that site may be a good place to start.

Men can be VERY PICKY when it comes to their fishing equipment. Perhaps a gift certificate to his favorite sporting goods store, w/ the stipulation that he uses it on a rod & reel, would be better. Unless you don't mind that if you get him the wrong one that he exchange it.

It depends. Not enough info. I have two types of salt water rod/reel. Spinning and open face.

Spinning is used for casting. A spinning rod could be used off of a pier, surf fishing or deep sea off of a boat. My spinning rods/reels are Shakespear.

An open faced rod on the other hand can't cast very well and you use it bottom fishing. You can bottom fish off of a deep water pier, bridge or a boat. Penn makes the best open faced reels.
