Formals - dress & conduct?
 

Does "Formal" still mean a tux?

Does dancing include removing one's shirt?

Is in now apropriate to leave one's date passed out in the lobby of the hotel?

Fullerton had a formal last week and I was appalled at the deterioration of standards that I saw. Somehow I don't think that I'm the one out of step here, but I'm willing to listen.

"Formal" has many meanings. In my experiences, people may just dress up a little because as soon as dinner is over, people take off their jackets, coats, and everything else as soon as the dancing begins.

What is considered "formal" has changed over the years. Consider this quote from the 1928 Paedagogus:

"Informal social events will require a business suit (preferably dark at night) or, if this is the prevailing local mode, light trousers and a blue coat. Full dress is alomost never used nowadays except at formal receptions and wedding, having been been supplanted by the tuxedo, which, of course, requires black vest, tie, and studs."

So I guess this means that, at that time, a tuxedo was considered "semi-formal"?

As for removing one's shirt, I don't know. Was it MCR??? ;)

I often recall a few years ago going to a chapter dance party where the undergrads and guests were dancing to rap artist "DMX"'s song "Love my N*****s but where's my B******?" (Ill let you fill in the blanks). That must have been in like 2000 or 1999 I think. I was shocked that people thought this was something to listen to in public, anyway it made me feel old to say the least. That being said I think that music has gone to the lowest common denominator, which Is why I listen to classic rock. However if you ask my grandfather he thinks Zepplin and Sabbath and the Who are a bunch of drug addled noise makers.

I wouldnt get too upset about it, the level of what is acceptable is going down in general, all you can do as the advisor is to point out things that are unsafe (people passing out in a hallway) and perhaps talk about being a gentleman, (have a formal wear and formal behavior kappa event, or teach the Phi Epsilon brothers how to tie a tie or something)

While times from us poor oldsters have change, it still should be proper to wear Slacks, Coats, and Ties for "Formal" Functions.

Cost being one reason. Every Brother should have at least one sport coat, slacks, shirt, and tie for special occasions.

TUX one time and I got married, when I got divorced, lucky to have a shirt on my back.

Basically, be presentable.:cool:

Great research! I imagine that "full dress" was a Top Hat and tails...

Our Colleges and Universities are not the "elitest" institutions that they were at one time. Few Undergraduates come to college with a tuxedo these days. Or a suit for that matter.

I do get a "kick" out of seeing T-shirts on eBay indicating that they were made for "Formal" dances!

I think the dress of young people today is as predictable as in my college days...anything to upset the old folks or to collectively thumb their noses at society. As a matter of fact, I think I still have a few clothing items in storage that have made a fashion "comeback." My problem is that I can't stuff my size 46 gut into my old 34s.... So, I stick with my classic "retro" blue blazer, tan Dockers, and penny loafers! No pennies and sometimes no socks....

Of course, not of that should be acceptable by brothers of LXA....how many posts in the Risk Management section have we seen with problems with formal functions of other fraternities....

What one chapter does, good OR bad (unfortunately, especially the bad these days) reflects upon the ENTIRE fraternity.

John, feel free to give those boys a (loving) smack upside their heads to knock some common sense into them. Normally, I wouldn't mind coming out there (I visited the Fullerton chapter in 1998 or 1999) and do it myself, but, I have to apparently go to KC to creatively acquire ("steal") apparent photos of Tom Earp in a 'fro!
