Divers keep looking for missing woman
OSU student had been attending houseboat party at Lake Shasta

LAKE SHASTA -- The search of Slaughterhouse Island and the waters surrounding it continued Monday for the Oregon college student who went missing from her houseboat party here Saturday evening.

The 23-year-old has been identified as Gina Zalunardo of Redmond, Ore., a junior who was on a break from her studies at Oregon State University, said Sgt. Mark Lillibridge of the Shasta County Sheriff's Department.

Zalunardo had accompanied her Delta Gamma sorority sisters on their annual Bridge Bay trek. She was last seen about 6 p.m. Saturday, shortly after having an argument with her boyfriend, sheriff's officials said.

She is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, 135 pounds with blond hair and green eyes.

Zalunardo's friends spent Saturday night searching for her, finally reporting her missing to the U.S. Forest Service about 6 a.m. Sunday.

Lillibridge, who was helping patrol the annual houseboat convergence on Lake Shasta, said he did not believe that foul play was involved, nor did he think the young woman was intoxicated at the time of her disappearance.

He remembers having spoken with Zalunardo once or twice Saturday afternoon.

She was wearing a light yellow skirt, a white-and-pink bathing suit top and sandals at the time.

Monday, Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue teams sent divers into the water and used remote-control underwater cameras in the waters off Slaughterhouse Island in their effort to find Zalunardo, Lillibridge said.

The island is near the junction of the Pit and Sacramento arms of Lake Shasta.

Sheriff's deputies found Zalunardo's vehicle and belongings in the parking lot at Bridge Bay marina.

Zalunardo's sorority sister, OSU freshman Valentina Sasieta, confirmed Monday that other members of Delta Gamma had returned from the trip.

Today, the search is scheduled to continue in the water surrounding the island, sheriff's deputies said Monday.

:( My prayers that she returns safely.

CutiePie2000 05-12-2005 01:36 AM

This is a horrible story to read. I hope that they find her safe and sound. Sadly, I lost a family member to drowing and they were missing for 24 hours. It was the longest 24 hours of my life and I think that I aged about 10 years overnight. So, I definitely feel for the parents, family and friends. It's a terrible feeling, not knowing. :(

Body Found At Shasta Lake Is OSU Student

May 13, 2005

- REDDING, Calif. - A body found on an island in Shasta Lake in California has been confirmed to be that of a missing Oregon State University student, authorities said Friday.
Gina Zalunardo, 22, disappeared last Saturday during a houseboat party after arguing with her boyfriend, according to the Shasta County sheriff's office.

The houseboat was anchored at Slaughterhouse Island, where the body was found shortly after 11:00 a.m. Thursday during a grid search, deputies said.

Zalunardo was not registered for spring term at Oregon State but had attended through winter term, according to university officials.

Deputies had said initially they did not suspect foul play but now they are calling it a "suspicious death."
