Fraternity Drug bust in Morgantown

Yesterday afternoon the Sigma Chi house was raided by authorities and at least one brother was arrested for dealing cocaine and heroin from the house. He is facing cumatively almost 200 years in prison and 7.5 million in fines, right now at least.

Not sure if the fraternity will be in trouble. I would assume so because of knowingly allowing someone to distribute and sell drugs.

What is kind of ironic is that last sunday they won an award for being the most outstanding fraternity on campus.

sucks

maybe it's because I've been going here for 4 years, that it seems like I've heard this story a hundred times. well, same concept, different greek letters.

Listen, don't do drugs. Nobody gives a crap that you're wasting away your life. What they care about is that your stupidity may impact them. And if you're dealing, just tell your friends "hey guys, I'm scum, you don't want to be around me" they'll understand.

that sucks

is it just me, or does it seem like EVERY campus has that ONE fraternity that has its share of drug issues.

There were 2 at IU, and both were taken care of (as in closed down) by their nationals.

It seems like if a chapter has a drug issue (though this case I guess it sounds like one person), that the alumni or the national hq has to have some sort of clue about this?

Its too bad this guy has pretty much screwed his life up...its worse that he drug his chapter with him.

from what everyone says, even people on here that have openly admitted to the drug problems, this shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone

Wow, that really sucks. I have 2 pretty good friends in Sigma Chi, they're doing a pretty good job keeping hush hush about it, this is the first I've heard of it. That's a big surprise, they definitely don't strike me as the type of chapter that's dealing drugs from their house. :(

The school is doing a very good job of keeping in hush-hush.

I think that is why they waited until pretty much the last day of school when everyone was gone to bust them. It's been going on for two years now.

I doubt that there will be any consequences for the fraternity.

wow! 200 years. why do they throw out numbers like that?

Rio_Kohitsuji 05-09-2005 01:45 PM

It's cocaine and heroin? Well, I guess I'll have to give him props for at least not cooking meth. (if you watch WV news you'll know what I'm talking about)

ETA: So, if he/they/whatever were selling the drugs yet giving the profit to charities could they put that up as a philanthropic fundraising? :p

I don't know - Sigma Chi nationals put out a communication earlier this year from a "zero tolerance" perspective about problem chapters. Even though they won an award, the bust happened in the house, which puts it in jeopardy.

Plus, just that this case made the media, it's usually a death sentence for a chapter. Negative PR is never tolerated by a national organization.

If I were that chapter, I'd hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Even though dealing drugs is REALLY REALLY bad, it's sad that if that person molested some little kids for years, he would probably only get a couple of months in jail...

Coramoor 05-09-2005 03:54 PM

I very much doubt he will serve 200 years, that's just what the sumation is of the minimum sentencing for all six counts are.

More than likely he will plea bargain his way out by testifying against other people in the ring that are higher up than he is. Although, if I remeber correctly for each million in fines you can't pay-that is a mandatory extra five years on your sentence.

...lol. Maybe. Although I think they might get sued for by the kid that was stabbed at their philanthropy two weeks ago-so the drug money may have to go to that.
