On a slightly serious note, I definately understand since I saw your post about starting a local. But you should really just get together with the people you are trying to start the local with and figure out what the group would like to do. Make lists and vote on the best one, but keep a list of the ones voted down for later ideas. You maybe able to change some of the ones that got voted down once you've actually down the ones you voted for and make them usable. Always remember, never have them do something an would never be willing to do themselves.
As for what we do. We require all of our pledges to speak English. Not eat live cows. They should always brush their teeth at least once a day. No drinking out of the toilets. They are required to open doors, instead of throwing their fellow pledges through them. We make sure to remind them to never drive 66mph backwards down a highway, interstate, rural road or neighborhood. |

I am so putting this in next semesters pledge book. |
Since you are starting a local sorority, okay important word is starting ie brand new, i am not sure what i have will apply to your situation.
We did really fun things like, every time all new members got 100% on pledge quizes we got free pizzas, or letter tees donated by older members. I liked the working together things. So when ever we did something together, ie we all volunteered for a community service that was not required (as an example) then we got a pearl in our badge ( an enlarged badge were the pearls can be filled in) and when/if we got the badge filled then we would get treated to a special event of our choosing from the older members. Of course all these things are volunteer basis. I think that it might be considered hazing to make us do these things. Maybe make a list of values and the under each value come up with things that encopmas that value and then offer the new members incentives (ie they don't have to do these tasks but if they do then they will get fill in the blank). OKay, so scholarship could be one value and under that value could be volunteering to work at a library reading books to kids, or organizing a tutoring night mixing new sisters with older sisters who have the same major or have older members tutor new members in classes that they have take, and new members could organize connecting these people. Of course these are examples. I bet with more brain storming you can come up with a lot more. Some of the values that i like to promote are the 4 points of the miss america crown (mostly cause it is public knowledge and i would not be stepping on secrets by talking about them) i say this cause scholarship is one of the values, also service is another. I forget the other 2 but i think those are the good places to start. good luck, debbie |
