Canadian donations
If you donate to your GLO's philantropic organization, do you get a charitable receipt for it?
I know that with Alpha Phi, it is tax deductible for Americans but I do not think it is tax deductible for Canadians. I cannot seem to find it listed as a registered charity on the CRA website. Just wondering if other Canadians encounter. Thanks! |
I don't know the answer to your question, but I would actually call the CRA.
This might be something that they didn't think to put on their website because it might not be a common deduction for Canadians. |
Donations to the Alpha Phi Foundation are not tax deductible for Canadians. However, I think a couple of organizations with Canadian chapters have made arrangements so that their Canadian members can get receipts - I think AOII is one such organization (correct me if I'm wrong, ladies!).

one way that TKE has found of remitting tax receipts here in Canada was to set up an Educational Fund.
All donations then can be given a receipt for income tax purposes. Ask your Alumni board to set one up, along with requirements for bursaries, etc. Hope this helps. |
If you have an American income, then you can claim an American donation. Otherwise, Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (our version of the IRS) doesn't per se allow it. You can try to submit - sometimes they catch it, sometimes they don't - just be aware that it may not be allowed.
There are several men's GLO who have organized in Canada to set up a Canadian foundation (Kappa Sigma, Zeta Psi off the top of my head). This way, donations made by Canadian members to these Canadian foundations can be issued receipts. Note that any donation I do make to AOII Foundation I do get a receipt whether I chose to try to submit to CCRA or not. It is good for record keeping anyways. one thing to keep in mindDonations only get about 17% of their value (compared to political party donations which are at 75% of value), so sometimes it is just not worth the hassle of being flagged by the CCRA for future audits. |
