9 Year old boy found hanging in closet

Third-Grader Found Hanging On Closet Hook At School
Boy In Intensive Care

UPDATED: 2:00 pm EDT April 27, 2005

PHILADELPHIA -- A third-grader at a Philadelphia public school was found hanging on a hook in a coatroom closet Tuesday, and police aren't yet sure exactly what happened.

Sources told WCAU-TV in Philadelphia that the 9-year-old boy is in intensive care at St. Christopher's Hospital. School officials and Philadelphia police are trying to find out if his hanging was an accident or if it was intentional.

The boy attends Samuel Pennypacker School in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia. ClickOnDetroit.com is withholding the child's name because the circumstances surrounding his injuries are still sketchy.

According to the Philadelphia public schools chief executive officer, Paul Vallas, about 9:30 a.m. a teacher sent the boy to the closet to hang up his coat.

"The one child in question had not hung up his coat, so he was asked to go to the coat room and hang up his coat. When he didn't come out -- (the teacher) described it as a minute, a minute and a half in the coatroom -- and then she called him and then went in and she saw him hanging from his uniform," Vallas said.

A school official administered CPR to the boy, who was unconscious.

School administrators said that none of the other students saw the boy unconscious in the closet, but WCAU-TV reported that a student who was in the class at the time had a different story.

With his mother's permission, the student said that it was not the teacher who found the student in the closet.

"He went in the closet and my friends heard some noise, so they went to go check on him and they saw him and he wasn't breathing," the boy said. He said those boys then told the teacher.

WCAU-TV brought the discrepancy to the attention of school officials who, at this time, continue to believe the teacher's account of what happened.

Vallas met with the boy's guardians -- his grandparents -- at the hospital.

"They just wanted an explanation of what happened, and we told them that the police were investigating, and obviously the school district is doing its own investigation. We just want to find out exactly what happened," Vallas said.

Vallas said that the grandparents told him there were no signs that the child was upset or depressed in any way.

I don't get it. If he was hanging by his clothes then how was he unconscious?

I assumed he was choked by his collar.

I found it a little odd that they said he showed no signs of depression. Now, they don't say WHY the grandparents are guardians, but in most cases that I've seen, it's usually due to abuse, death of the parents or abandonment. In these situations, most kids are going to have some emotional issues surrounding it. Kids don't always show depression in the same way that adults would.

Very sad story. :(

We are talking about Philadelphia. The parents are most likely Democrats and they probably abandoned the kid.

Yesterday a 7 year old was shot in front of a library. The target was his stepdad. His stepdad jumped in a van and fled after the shooting and left the kid bleeding in the street.

Child Still Critical After Shooting Near Library

PHILADELPHIA -- A 7-year-old rushed to the hospital Wednesday after he was shot in front of a library is still in critical but stable condition on Thursday.

Police are actively looking for the boy's stepfather, who they believe was the intended victim and also fled the shooting scene.

Jerran Parks, 7, was hit several times. Parks was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center and transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

Parks had surgery Wednesday night. Surgeons were unable to remove the bullets.

"The intended victim was not the child, the intended victim appeared to be this child's stepfather. Unfortunately, the stepfather just took off, left his child there," said Sylvester Johnson, Philadelphia's police commissioner.

The shooting took place near the Oak Lane Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, across from Ellwood Elementary School.

Authorities said that shortly after 3 p.m., just as school was letting out, the boy was shot in the head and in his side as he stood with his stepfather.

Witnesses were horrified by what they saw.

"The shots are ringing out, so I froze, and I'm looking to see where the shots are coming from, and then I see the kid and he goes right down," said Larry Cooley, a witness.

Another witness, who did not want to be identified, said she was walking near the library when she heard several shots and saw the child's stepfather react.

"The guy in the black, he shot the kid. The father acted, like, boom, he just started chasing him, got in his car and chased him. The guy who did it was on foot and the father was chasing him in the car," the witness said.

The witness went on to say that the stepfather attempted to take off in a van, which police found a few blocks away.

Police said they are looking for two gunmen and the stepfather. They described the shooter as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, and an African-American male.

School officials said no other children were hurt.

The Citizen's Crime Commission is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

"School will be open Thursday, but you can bet there will be increased security around the school," said Vincent Thompson, of the Philadelphia School District.

A local minister in the area said this is the third major crime to occur within a five-block radius within a week. Over the weekend a 12-year-old boy was shot in the stomach and Tuesday at Pennypacker Elementary School a boy was found hanging in a coatroom.

Abortion should be legal for up to 7 years after conception.
