Chi Omega Suspended for One Year - Tufts
 

Tufts has suspended the Chi Omega chapter there for a year. Reasons given are 1) participating in hazing Delta Tau Delta pledges, 2) participating in distributing alcohol to underage persons, and 3) contributing to the endangerment of others. According to the article in the April 27 '05 student paper, Chi Omega HQ has also sanctioned the chapter and is investigating it.

We have 2 Tufts alumnae who are very active in our NYC alumnae chapter and they are wonderful women.

This is too bad. Hopefully it will all work out in the end.

I think Tufts is slightly more prestigious than your alma mater.

Actually Tufts is quite a good school - and I wouldn't call the Boston area a "small pond," especially not academically.

Since Tufts is ranked more or less in the middle of U.S. News and World Report's top 50 national universities, in the same general territory as Wake Forest and Chapel Hill (U. of North Carolina), I'd be willing to say Tufts is probably more prestigious than most alma maters. :)

As would I. I think Tufts is a pretty nice school, and as KSigkid pointed out, Boston is not exactly a "small pond" in terms of good universities.

Pitt State college = best in Pitt, Kansas!

If one considers Harvard, Boston College, Tufts, Boston University and Wellsley (as well as a whole bunch of other schools) as qualifying as a "small pond," I'd like to know their definition of a big pond.

ETA: MIT, Brandeis, Holy Cross, and a whole bunch of other great schools in the area...I can't believe I forgot them.

Tufts has a tiny Greek system too, which makes this more of a shame that everyone is getting into trouble. There are only two other sororities, and I've heard one of them is really small.

It's also funny because there are some huge parties thrown at Tufts, by independents that never get this type of attention. I went there quite a few times while in school (a friend from home went there), and things weren't nearly as tight as they were at other schools in the area. This crackdown surprises me.

That's a real shame they are letting some kind of "tradition" that is probably very obviously hazing (at least by NPC standards) continue despite the very strict NPC guidelines on hazing activites. Just b/c they are helping "haze" new members of a fraternity that is not NPC, I don't think that's OK.

Since I obviously do not know the specifics on what the hazing was in this case (for all I know it might have been a scavenger hunt or something ;)), I just hope it works out for the best. If anything, the chapter will hopefully learn from this and discontinue this tradition since the school seems to have an issue with it being hazing in their definitions.

Did that make sense? Probably not.. it was a long day at work, so my sentences are all messed up :p

While I think sanctions, like no social events, are an acceptable punishment, I do think denying the sorority a pledge class for a full year is inappropriate. Its going to create a discrepency in numbers, that may be hard to replace.

While I can see your concern in numbers, you have to look at the flip-side of the coin: Participating in hazing (even if it isn't hazing members of their own organization) is inappropriate as well.
