That's how I say it but it always seems like a terribly awkward word to say, kind of like caramel.

Peaches-n-Cream 04-21-2005 03:42 PM

sear up

I find mirror and scissors difficult to say. meer or

I have also heard people pronounce program as pro grum.

Jill1228 04-21-2005 04:06 PM

I pronounce it sir-up

And I get weird looks in the NW because I pronounce Caramel KAR-mel

KillarneyRose 04-21-2005 04:21 PM

"syrup" should be "sir-up". However, my Jersey Guy husband calls it "sear-up". I correct my daughters when they emulate Daddy as far as that. :D

Kevlar281 04-21-2005 04:29 PM

Seer-Up...

PhiPsiRuss 04-21-2005 04:56 PM

Its pronounced the way that its spelled: syr-up.

The "syr" is pronounced just like the first syllable in "Syria."

tinydancer 04-21-2005 04:58 PM

It sorta sounds like "sur-rup" when I say it.

epchick 04-21-2005 05:24 PM

I usually say sear up but I also will say Surrup .

RedRoseSAI 04-21-2005 05:25 PM

sear up

It's probably another regional thing.

CutiePie2000 04-21-2005 05:30 PM

Sear Up.

KSig RC 04-21-2005 06:07 PM

the y is not a 'hard' i, according to my OED - it's (si'r-ep, sūr-)

[i' is as in pit, ūr is as in urge]

Optimist Prime 04-21-2005 06:16 PM

i will cease this moment to demonstrate my leadership capabilities

Optimist Prime 04-21-2005 06:19 PM

[srp, sūr-]

now to translate from IPA to non IPA speaking form (the reverse e thing that i think is called a schwa but a schwa might be something else is missing)
