OH NO!

Bad news.

Pure speculation, but I wonder if that's why he didn't anchor coverage of the Pope's death last weekend.

ABC said he wasn't feeling well and wanted to rest up to cover the funeral and conclave.

Normally, nothing short of an armed insurrection will keep the major anchors from a story like that.

DeltAlum 04-05-2005 01:51 PM

Unfortunately, it looks like I was right...

According to ABC News,

"He last anchored ''World News Tonight'' Friday and was too ill to work Saturday during the network's special report on Pope John Paul II's death."

They go on to say that he will continue to anchor the evening newscast whenever he feels well enough.

Charles (?) Gibson (sorry, I don't see GMA often) and Elizabeth Vargas will be the fill in anchors.

That's sad to hear:(

Very sad news; hopefully he makes a full recovery.

This has been quite a year for the group of major news anchors.

:(

He is one of my favorite anchors. I wish him a total recovery

ZTABullwinkle 04-05-2005 04:23 PM

I just heard this news today. I had wondered why ABC wasn't going to jump ahead of NBC and CBS who had recently retired newscasters not to send (Brokaw and Rather). I know that either Fox News or MSNBC had reported about this being the first "big" international story that didn't have a fmailiar nightly news face attached to it. But they never mentioned the fact that Jennnings was too ill.

Saw him on TV today. Is it just me or has he lost ALOT of weight? I understand that would be common with a diagnosis of lung cancer, but....

He'll have a rough time ahead. My father-in-law beat lung cancer last year but it's back and the treatments aren't working.:( His voice is almost gone and he sounds like he's strangling.

Yes...he quit about 20 years ago.

You're on a real sympathy kick now, aren't you?

In Jennings early days as a reporter/anchor, the image of the journalist was a hard charging, hard drinking, smoking like a smoke stack individual.

It was also before the days of warning labels on cigarette packs and only about the time that the real risks of smoking were being discovered.

It sounds like he quit when the health risks became obvious, but it was probably too late by then.

So it really was like the movie Anchorman made it out to be. Wow.

Anyway, this sucks. Well hopefully he'll recover well.
