Hog roast to raise greek awareness Event sponsored by Phi Sigma Kappa, Alpha Omicron Pi YaVonda Smalls | Chief Reporter April 01, 2005 The scent of barbecued pork, roasted pork and baked beans will drift from Riverside Avenue on Saturday as Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and Alpha Omicron Pi sorority come together to sponsor an all-you-can-eat hog roast. The hog roast, which will include a mini track race, will serve as the philanthropy event for both greek organizations and will help promote greek awareness, Knoll said. Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics of Indiana, Phi Sigma Kappa's philanthropy, and the Arthritis Research Foundation, Alpha Omicron Pi's philanthropy. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1104 W. Riverside Ave. The cost of the event is $10 per person or $35 per team. Team entries will be accepted until 9:30 a.m. Saturday. RadioNow 93.1, based in Indianapolis, will also be there to broadcast the event, Knoll said. Phi Sigma Kappa first sponsored the hog roast last year and raised more than $1,900, he said. "All philanthropic events are alcohol-free and provide more visibility for the greek community," she said. "It shows greeks do more than drink and party. Everyone has very worthwhile, charitable organizations, and it's very good all around for everyone involved." |

Note: Always have a weather plan for an outdoor event or a back up date if possible.
Fraternity, sorority ride for charity Officials blame bad weather for low turnout at hog roast Rebecca Pullen | Staff Reporter April 04, 2005 Saturday's Roast 'n' Ride event was not as successful as Phi Sigma Kappa and Alpha Omicron Pi had hoped because of the dreary weather, Aaron Eskridge, co-chairman, said. The event consisted of a trike race in the morning and an all-you-can-eat hog roast for $8 a plate in the afternoon. The winning team of the race, Chi Omega won a trophy for their participation. However, the event isn't just about bringing the two organizations together, it's about helping the community. As part of their philanthropy week, the money raised will go to charities of the two greek organizations, the Indiana Special Olympics and Arthritis Research. Some of the events sponsors that were at the event were a local radio station, Radio Now, Crystal Catering and the University Police Department. |
