Rhode Island: ZBT breaks ground for new fraternity house

ZBT breaks ground for new fraternity house

03/25/05 - Students, staff and alumni gathered to celebrate the construction of a new house for Zeta Beta Tau.

"I'm ecstatic," Dan Riley, the University of Rhode Island's ZBT chapter president said. "It's been a long process."

URI President Robert Carothers addressed the members of ZBT with praise and caution for the future.

"You are all extraordinary leaders," he said. " When I came to URI, I was disillusioned about the fraternity situation. The challenge is to maintain what you have become in a new environment."

The new house is modeled after the original building. Lerner/Lads & Bartels, Inc., a Providence-based architectural firm, designed the house, and Shawmut Design and Construction will build the new house. The projected completion date of the new $2.2 million building is September 2005.

Congrats to ZBT! So many fraternities have left campus, that it is wonderful to hear this news. This is a big step for the URI Greek System.

I'm sure Chi Omega is excited about having you guys as neighbors again.......

Thanks for noticing our little article. I was president when the house project really got rolling. It was the result of years and years of hard work.

Our chapter started 5 years ago, and since then we have won a few greek weeks an been fraternity of the year at URI for 3 years. We have one back to back Brummer Cups (ZBT's highest national award) and the chapter was recently recognized with the NIC's award of distinction.

I graduated from URI in May and I now work for ZBT National as Director of Operations. I couldn't be more proud of the URI guys.
