NPHC Orgs?

Do all NPHC get brands?

ZetaAce 10-12-2000 07:10 AM

No. That is a personal choice of the individual member.

Of course Not, in fact some sororities regard branding or tatooing of letters as distasteful and belittling to the organization.

Peace & Blessings

It is a matter of personal choice and I have heard that some find both (tattoos and branding) distasteful.
However, historically, in some organizations, branding was MANDATORY before crossing/initiation.

Sapphire Sensation: where did you get that info? The info that I know doesn't support that.

The Researcher 10-14-2000 01:28 PM

Ok, so I'm correct in saying that Every org will if the person wants to, but it's never mandatory.

Next question which may be out of line. If so just tell me out of line. Where do you go to get this done?

I don't understand the conclusion you're trying to draw with that statement. Branding is not a official practice of any of the NPHC organizations, rather something individual members decide to do to show love and commitment to his/her respective organization. I have HEARD (I'm not saying this is true) at least one NPHC organization has kicked around the idea of suing members who get brands/tatoos of the letters/symbols for coypyright infringement.

It's not so much that we are "allowed" to brand/tatoo ourselves. It's more like no one has put a halt to the practice of branding because the issues of how to "stop" it, repremanding "offenders" and who would pay for the removal of the "offending" brand/tatoo have not been, in my opinion, dealt with successfully one way or another, if it's been brought up for serious discussion al all.

You can get a bruh from your chapter to brand you or if your chapter hasn't branded in a while you can get someone else to brand you.

The Researcher 10-15-2000 11:04 AM

I have seen the diamondK, the Omega, and the Sigma.

I have seen a variety of A-PHI-A brands. Is there a standard brand for Alphas?

Does IOTA PHI THETA brand and if they do, what is it?

Finer Woman10-A-91 10-19-2000 01:45 AM

Frater Ross,
Sapphire Sensation's information is correct. She said in the PAST it was mandatory in SOME organizations. Although no one has admitted to you personally the mandate of ritualistic branding (why would they?) does not mean it did not exist...it did. I am going to leave the details alone. The truth is its only important to those in the particular organizations in question.

Sapphire Sensation's information is wrong. No NPHC organization has ever made branding mandatory. It is just another one of a bunch of NPHC "urban legends".

Members of Iota do have brands. There is no set brand. I have seen the "I", entire crossing information, the greek letters and/or chapter letters. It varies depending on where you go. Me personally, I do not have one but it is to eaches own.

I concurr with my Sorors. Branding was apart of the pledge process of some NPHC organizations back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Thorough research on your part will reveal this information.

Thank you Sands and PrettyKitty for your support...That's what Sisterhood is all about!!!!!

DoggieStyle82: Give a holla to some of your older Frat Brothers, they will tell you the real deal.

You all have got to realize that not everything that we want to know about our respective organizations is right in front of our eyes. We have loads of history out there...but, you have to be open to it.
In other words, don't shy away from the more "seasoned" sisters and brothers that you meet...THEY ARE OUR HISTORY...EMBRACE THEM!!!!

SapphireSensation: I know my orgs history very well and I also know the origin of Branding. My comment related to why other greeks do it when it has no organizational relevance or history associated with it.

According to information in Hank Nuwer's book Wrongs of Passage, one Panhellenic Sorority has continued with the branding-and he documents a case. I'll have to look the name of the sorority up, but it happened in on a northern campus. The one he talks about is not a BGLO, but one of the Panhellenic Council members.
