Paint Incident at Tufts

The March 10, 2005 Tufts student paper reports on an incident where fraternity pledges allegedly poured paint on sorority women. I have a question that the article (in the "Police Briefs" section of the Tufts Daily) doesn't answer: What the h*ck were people doing out "guarding" a "cannon" at four in the morning? Is this a work-study job at Tufts? A noble campus tradition that only sounds stupid to outsiders? Surely not some kind of required activity that might be considered hazing, I hope?

Just a snippet from the article:

Sorority members harassed while guarding cannon

Four sisters of an unnamed sorority complained that several fraternity pledges allegedly poured cans of paint on them while they were guarding the cannon next to Goddard Chapel on Sunday, March 6 at 4:03 a.m.

According to the sorority sisters, four pledges approached them while they were guarding the canon early Sunday morning. As one pledge distracted them, the other three allegedly poured "jugs of paint" on the victims.

As Tufts University Police Department (TUPD) officers arrived on the scene they spotted two of the female students distressed . . . the victims later positively identified the students.

Tufts officials informed the perpetrators that the incident would be documented and forwarded to the Dean of Students office.

The guarding the cannon thing might be a school-related thing. At Penn State, the night before the homecoming game, we have Guarding the Lion and it's kinda like a mini-Pep Rally with music, pizza, soda, and cheering. The tradition started may years ago after another school dumped paint on our lion shrine the night before the homecoming game.

I don't know the whole story with the guarding the cannon thing, but it is a possibility that the sorority wasn't doing anything wrong.

If, it was real paint, then stupidity reigns.

Water based food coloring should have been the coloring of the hour. I am sure that their hair really was mussed up.

Tufts This!

At tufts, there's this cannon, and student groups paint it to advertise various things going on, whether it be a philanthropy event, an upcoming play, or whatever. You have to guard it after you've painted it to make sure no one paints over your stuff.

(northwestern has a similar tradition involving a rock)
