TOKYO -- A Japanese man and his two sisters were worried something might be wrong with dad. And they were right.

The old man had been dead for nearly a decade. Police questioned the three elderly siblings Tuesday, after the decomposing body of their father was found lying on a futon bed in the family's home.

Police said the man's children thought he was still alive, but became worried lately and consulted a relative. Police said judging by the condition of the remains, the father could have died as long as 10 years ago.

I always heard that the Japanese honor their elders, but isn't this taking it a little far?

I was wondering the same thing--- wouldn't dear old dad be stinking to high heaven at that point--not to mention the decay.... maybe they just turned down the a/c to keep all that under control????????????????

This is crazy!! I don't get how this can be real. Didn't they think it was weird that they hadn't seen him move or talk for the past ten years.

or eat, or go to the restroom, or bathe, or complain about not being able to find the remote...or to tell them to stop fighting...

You'd think a person would notice something like that!

It does NOT take ten years for a body to decompose. This can't be real.

this has got to be a joke.

there is no way in the world the family did not know he was dead.

imagine everyone sitting down to dinner:

*brother talking to sisters*

brother: go wake poppa-san up for dinner.

1st sister: ok!

*1 st sister goes to door*

1st sister: poppa-san, time for dinner? are you coming?

*there is no answer. 1st sister comes back to table.

2nd sister: is he hungry?

1st sister: nah, i don't think so he did not answer.

2nd sister: WOW! that is wierd it's been over 10 years since he has sat down with with us. hmmmmm, i wonder what is wrong?

brother: that too is strange, my dear sister-sans. let us actually walk in the room and see what is wrong. after all, it's been 10 years.
