Is this an old AST badge on ebay?

Is this really an old AST badge?

Well, it does have a border of pearls with rubies at the corners, and I know that there are badges with that, I believe it's for if you're national president or something...I'm not positive on that though. Altho the shape is all wrong...It is gorgeous though!

philanthropyAST 03-03-2005 11:12 AM

Thanks for the insight on the badge. I am not sure of the authenticity. I have forwarded a message on to National Council to look into it :) We don't want to be bidding against each other, thus raising the price of the badge. Have a TAUriffic day!

FYI- I am the highest bidder, I have gotten some people saying it is an AST badge and some say it isn't, if it turns out it isn't an AST badge, I will be sending it to the organization's it is.

So we will know on sunday if I won it

I looked at this too and am baffled... what is under the scroll? It looks like a gold square or something... let us know mm.

mmcline 03-03-2005 02:44 PM

I am waiting on a replie from the seller. I asked her where she got the pin, if there are any engravings (like intials) on the back and what is under the scroll.

I guess we will see. I am proud though that AST pins are the hardest pins to find apparently, or thats what all the pin collectors I have talked to, have said.

PsychTau2 03-03-2005 05:24 PM

From everything that I know, it is NOT an AST sorority badge. I've see the archives at HQ, and there isn't any mention of something similar in the history (at least what I saw).

It very well could be an Alpha Sigma Tau FRATERNITY badge. Yep...you heard me. There is a local fraternity (can't remember where cause it's been over a year that I've talked about this) somewhere that is called Alpha Sigma Tau.

I'd still buy it though, just cause it looks cool!!

This is her response to me:

i don't remember for sure..but i think it came from an estate i bought 3 or 4 years ago. if that is true...then it belonged to Dorothy Loyd (married name). she had a business in town, also worked at juvinile center and was also an auditor in vigo county indiana. again, i can't swear that is where it came from...but most likely. no engravings on back. the thing under the scroll appears to maybe be a book with 2 fine lines on both sides? no idea what any of it means.

So who knows? I tried look up AST fraternity but couldn't find anything. I guess we will see, if I win it.

mmcline 03-03-2005 10:48 PM

She just e-mailed me back, it is from the estate she was talking about. The lady was in her 80-90s when she died. So who knows, this could be one of our pins, and its just extremely old.

I am curious now, I would love to find or figure out the history of the pin.

National Council is looking into it's authenticity. They contacted me today. However it appears that this probably isn't one of our badges but they are still investigating. I will pass on the info of where it was obtained to them.

Have a TAUriffic Day!

Link to a story about an Indiana State graduate who was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Fraternity in the 50's:

Press Release here

Bruce made several speeches at several banquets, and text of those speeches are in library collections at schools in those states. (I don't have the time right now to contact those schools to get more info on that...)

Alpha Sigma Tau Fraternity at Eastern Michigan? Wow. How weird!

philanthropyAST 03-04-2005 11:53 PM

PsychTau2, I think you are right. This is a FRATERNITY badge, not one of our Sisterhood ones. Very weird.

HQ looked into the database and did not find anyone with that name. However this could be because it is a married name, not the maiden one. But chances are this is not ours.

mmcline 03-05-2005 01:48 AM

Does anyone know if the fraternity still exists? Because if I win it, I would love to return it to them, but if it no longer exists, I'll keep it, I guess.

FYI- The library in Texas is mailing me the copy of AD bruce's speech he gave to the Alpha Sigma Tau fraternity.

This has been really interesting looking up things about this pin, Its definately interesting, espically that there was an AST fraternity at Michigan Normal College, too.

Little E 03-07-2005 11:07 AM

Wow I went out of town when something interesting actually happened.

did you win the badge?
