ETA: Back when I was doing my TV News/Anchor job with the school's TV Station, I had the chance to interveiw the outgoing Chancellor of the Board of Regents for Higher Ed in the state of Oklahoma. What he kept showing me, and what he seemed to be the most proud about was that he had kept the rise of tuition cost to a minimum while in office -- and it had not even risen at the same rate as inflation. The year he left office, a new gentleman came in. He, and some political friends managed to get the tuition increase cap removed, and double-digit tuition hikes have become the order of the day. Our large state schools are justifiying it because they want to meet the "Big XII average", and our regional state schools are justifying it so that they can fund their classrooms on the same level as the bigger fish. There's been a pretty major shift in how administrators see tuition. It used to be a necessary evil, now it's a honey pot. |

Was invovled... and I don't mean to be discouraging but I found it frustrating and very un-rewarding.
The problem, as I see it, is that many students are beholden to the promotion of special interest groups - without realizing that the 'real-world' requires more than words to get sh*t done. Stick to your principles and guide youself by the ideals of your GLO - that will act as a compass I see sorely absent from many running for political office (even at a student level - and even by members of GLOs). While this may sound overly negative - an aspect I fully acknowledge - if you have the will power stick with it... perhaps you can be the one to make a difference... As it is now I'm but an advisor and critic for those who want to run for student politcs... and only some listen. Howver I do understand the issues of an off-campus student body (97% commmuter) and a desire for a freeze in tuition fees (the primary issue since '94 here in student politcs). Stick with it and don't sell out your convictions for the sake of power - the opnly relavent advice I can give. |
Our student government is turning into a joke at ISU- their most popular times that I can remember while I've been around or at ISU would be when the debated having juice at every meal and whether or not they should have a dress code for GSB.
Today's Article on Student Apathy towards GSB GSB stands for Government of the Student Body, I prefer it to stand for Get Student Bucks since they always want to increase student fees for their projects. Another One Quote:
