Sweet Valley University....

Okay, I was at Borders the other day, and being the HUGE dork that I am, wanted to find some sorority books (I actually like writing to the publishers of ones that bash greeks, its a good time!) I found a Sweet Valley Univeristy book about I think Jessica wanting to join the "Exclusive Theta Sorority" and then it goes on about her having to do all this stuff... blah blah blah... I didnt look too much into the book to see if it mentioned any other letters besides "Theta". Have any of you seen this book? I dont know if they are refering to Kappa Alpha Theta when they say Theta, or if they just picked a random letter... (But being that most everyone knows Kappa Alpha Theta as Theta.... I dont know, I just wanted to fill ya in if you didnt know about it, I dont want any other fellow greeks getting a bad rep from another stinkin author! (I mean really now, those books were written in the 1990's cos I had some of them in Middle School... )
Well thats enough rambling for me!

I noticed that, too!!!

What I find kind of weird is that the author used a lot of "known" sororities as SVU sororities, for example - one she used was Pi Phi, however, it wasn't Pi Beta Phi - it was something else, but it immediately trigerred "Pi Beta PHi" for me. Pi Phi was also not portrayed that well in the SVU series.

I'm sure Theta is not Kappa Alpha Theta in her book - it's probably some other letters - but maybe it is sort of like Kappa alpha Theta? I don't know.

I think Chi Omega was portrayed too, I'm not sure.

LOL, I'm also a Sweet Valley High dork - though this year I haven't picked up a SVU book yet!

Ya know, Angel, I don't know if the author (creator- Francine Pascal) was Greek or not - I don't know !!! She makes Theta sound realy nice being that Jessica Wakefield's mother was president of Theta, but then again, she makes the Thetas sound snobby. She doesn't portray the other sororities nicely, either. I guess she wasn't Greek????

I hate to say that I have read the first several books in that series... the "Theta" is Theta Alpha Theta, and it is Pi Beta Phi used. I was floored when I saw that because it doesn't seem like the type of thing that Pi Beta Phi would permit their name to be used for.

The books portray all of the sororities pretty negatively, especially Theta Alpha Theta. They will only offer a bid to the twin that wants it IF she makes the twin that doenst want be a Theta take one. They do all sorts of horrible hazing crap, and are generally shallow and vicious.

The Pi Beta Phi's get the best portrayal in the book. They are the un-sorority, they don't wear sorority blazers, and they are down-to-earth, very environemtnal, and full of activists.

Is Theta Alpha Theta a real sorority? I only ask because I found a web site for them and it reads....

Do you want to be in a club that allows you to make new friends who share your interests? Are you a Sweet Valley High or Sweet Valley University fanatic. Are you sick of clubs that focus on all of Sweet Valley instead of just the series that YOU like. Well then Theta Alpha Theta is the sorority for you. And best of all, it's free!

A real sorority would have people join for free on line???? Would they?

I don't think its real. The contact info is to a girl (Nicole McKenzie) who uses Liz Wakefield as a internet handle. And the page hasn't been updated since 1997...

SUV Quotes

K- a while back I read SUV to death - and I was reading this thread and decided to breeze through the first book to see if they did name sororites and fraternities....look what I found -

From Book #1 College Girls

"The Pi Beta Phis were not the most prestigious sorority on campus. They didn't have the most popular or wealthiest girls. None of them models or daughters of film stars. And they weren't the sorority all the "right" people wanted to join.

It does go on to say how the character Elizabeth liked how they were involved in charitable causes and really engaged in intelligent conversations during Rush. But then the other character Jessica comes in and says this:

'I can't wait to get out of here anyway," Jessica went on. "This place is the pits. I haven't seen this many dogs since the last time I took Prince Albert to the vet." Later she makes the comment "I bet the most exciting thing they do is take their bottles to the recycling center".

They do mention the "Sigmas" (frat) who were known as the rich, snobby trouble makers on campus, Theta Alpha Theta (which they say is the most prestigious sorority ever), and the Zetas (frat) which is only for super stud athletes.

If anyone out there has a small collection - # 8 should be interesting...intitled "Sorority Scandal"
