Pledgeing While Suspended?

Somedays I just can't believe what I am reading.

"A lot of Greek communities feel betrayed by the administration," Mark Dennison, National Pan Hellenic Council treasurer and member of Alpha Phi Alpha, said. "Now we have no where to run - we've lost all confidence and respect in the entire department based on the actions of few."

"His involvement shows a blatant favoritism for a fraternity against the University."

Points to ponder...

Since these articles didn't go into detail about the hazing incidents, it's all supposition on our parts. If it were one of the chapters I'm involved with, I'd investigate and find out what went awry. Supposing that the offense was a major one, I'd back sanctions--after all, our Ritual Oaths have to stand for something.

However, any chapter worth fighting for is going to have alumni support, and "support" comes in a variety of flavors. Some GLO chapters have the luxury of maintaining both a Housing Corp. and Alumni Assn., while most seem to have the two entities combined.

There's also the never popular "Alumni Control Board", which should only exist in instances where the chapter has shown an immense lack of "getting it". This is the last step before changing the locks, pulling the charter, etc.

For the student authors to say, in effect, "Hey, alumni, keep out of this" is wrong. I'm a Lambda Chi, even though I graduated some time ago. I still help out during "Clean-Up Week", donate canned goods to the food drives, support the fraternity's educational foundation, volunteer to be on two alumni boards and act as an alumni advisor, etc. It's the chapters that DON'T have alumni support that are hurting...

On the other hand, at some schools suspended organizations still go about their activities as though nothing has happened. They recruit and may, in some instances, outdo their former IFC brethren because they can provide John Barleycorn & demon rum to their "rushees". In a sad, twisted way, their alums also thumb their noses (or raise 1/2 a peace sign) in the general direction of the administration building. It takes all kinds to make a world, I guess...

Interfraternally,
Bill F.

Update: Decision Reversed
The student paper now reports that the previous decision has been reversed.

http://technicianonline.com/story.php?id=011319

My guess is that the publicity caused too much heat, but that's just a guess.

Excerpt from the article:
In an decision made by Vice chancellor for student affairs Tom Stafford Friday, Delta Sigma Phi cannot have any recruitment prviledges before their suspension is up. This overturns an appeal granted by Associate Vice Chancellor Tim Luckadoo, who allowed Delta Sig to admit potential members who had deferred pledging bids from the fall, but were not allowed to join because of the fraternity's suspension. Delta Sig plead guilty to hazing in October and lost University recognition until Fall 2005.

Stafford said the main issue was conflicting actions by the Office of Student Conduct and Greek Life.

"The only one issue for me was had the decison changed the sanctions and the intention that came from the Judicial Board. It had," Stafford said. "No one in Greek Life can do that. That was the only real complaint that had validity for me."

hijack

There is a chapter of XYZ that got kicked off campus after a 2 million dollar coke bust and numerous accusations of rape and sexual assault a few years ago. Some were arrested, but got off due to high positions and connections. By kicked off I mean the actives were forced to go alum, still be able to go to alummi meetings, and still wear letters. They still recruit underground through another fraternity, and from what I understand they had 13 pledges in the fall...

I'm sure some of them are nice guys...

Wow, that is so reassuring and sad!:(

qteasied.

While what is posted and I can beleive it, then what are they doing there and the drug dealers not in prison for life.

No little operation from the sounds of it?

Who doesnt know who is around and all of the hearsay?

How is that possible? The recruit "through another fraternity" thing?

Do they use another fraternity's chapter house for their recruitment? i.e. They were active with the AB chapter of XYZ fraternity and now, as XYZ alumni, they use the KLM fraternity's house to recruit members for XYZ.

Or do they recruit under another name? i.e. They were active members of the AB chapter of XYZ but now these same guys call themselves the GHI fraternity. And as such, they are recruiting not for XYZ but for GHI.

In either case, it doesn't seem like the XYZ HQ would recognized any of these 13 pledges as members of XYZ since they were not recruited via an active XYZ chapter.

quite ridiculous.

I think it was good that the decision was reversed. I think it's best to keep an equal playing field. Since there was no appeal process anywhere, in a way it is not really fair b/c groups before them did not know they would appeal the university decision.

Hopefully these guys will learn from their mistake, and come back strong whenever their suspension is up.

texas*princess 03-10-2005 03:29 PM

why are they selling their houses?

Of course they're not going to be recognized, but they still wear letters like they are...Guys join that "frat"(yes I am disrespecting them on purpose)because it's a group of rich, cute guys who get the girls and have parties. My school doesn't have housing for Greeks, but back when this "frat" was still recognized, they had their own unofficial offcampus party house. That's where the bust took place.

I don't know exactly how the recruitment thing works, but I'm guessing it's word of mouth. The other fraternity I'm talking about has *SOME* brothers who deal drugs. I know a pusher who gets his stash from brothers. I do know about their status and story because it was in the campus newspaper the year before I came to school. Alot of it has died down now or just gone underground, but it's still hard to forget about it.

If their HQ recognizes the former chapter members as alums, then they have every right to wear their letters. And of course, associate with each other as fellow students and friends.

However, "pledges" wearing letters - while not being actual (legal?) members of the fraternity but some sort of drug club, as it were - is not right.

Seems rather pathetic all around.

That's called "renegade."
