SX-SLO: No confessions, no eyewitnesses or evidence
News briefs from California's Central Coast
The Associated Press Associated Press SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Prosecutors decided not to file manslaughter charges against three Signa Chi fraternity members in the death of a student at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. The district attorney's office announced Monday there wasn't enough evidence to file charges in the April 4, 2002, death of Cal Poly student Brian Gillis, 19, who died after taking the hallucinogenic drug GHB. "We don't have any confessions, no eyewitnesses or any physical evidence recovered" to prove such charges, Chief Deputy District Attorney Stephen Brown said. Patricia Gillis, mother of the dead teenager, was upset with the decision. "A felony crime has been committed," she said. Prosecutors said they needed to prove that fraternity members either aided and abetted Gillis' use of the drug or failed to seek medical attention when they knew his life was in danger. The Gillis family settled a civil lawsuit for $357,000 with various members of the Sigma Chi fraternity, which was kicked off campus amid hazing violations in 2000. |
gillis death
The SLO DA only used the evidence to take the easy way out. The rest will come out this week on a talk show and other legal measures are in the process of arresting these boys now.

I have followed this case and read Ms. Gillis site. Its tragic all the way 'round.
I'd like to share something with you snooky. I'm not defending what the Sigma Chi's may or may not have done, but be careful how you phrase stuff on this board. You cant will something into being. If the DA declines to press charges, thats about it. No one was ever arrested or convicted because some information was presented on a talk show. People on this board get REAL tired, REAL fast of the 'its all a conspiracy and the DA is in on it' shtick. Cause we've all heard this talk before. It was about 4 years ago and involved the Chi O's, Sam Houston State University, the Hutntsville DA, and a couple of loons named Kristen and Barbara Verzyveldt. They swore and swore and swore that indictments were pending, people were going to be arrested, federal charges were to be filed. After all the tabloid TV stories were run and the talk show circut was completed, the only thing that came of it was that the gals on here (Babs, her daughter and all their personalities) that talked SO MUCH SMACK had to apologize to the people they defamed IN COURT and pay a fine. I'm not denyting your allegations, but if you wanna prove youre right, the best course of action here on GC is to lay low until you can come back with some convictions. Until then, hang out, post and feel free not to raise the dust in the risk management forum on this issue. |
