Letters on your house

Have any of you had to actually order/build letters to install on the outside of your house? My chapter is moving into a new house this summer and will need new letters, but I'd prefer to have something nicer than your standard painted letters cut out of plywood.

Thanks!

Someone's dad did our letters...they were wood, routed on the edges. Better than plywood, but heavier, which was sorta rough hanging. Then he painted them purple, with the edges in gold. They look great.

We had metal letters that a father of a sister made for us. They look great and so far have survived a couple Wisconsin winters with no visible aging. We do have extra paint incase we need to touch up. Some of the sororities at Drexel have very nice looking letters, I think they're metal also. I'd talk to a sign making shop, they should be able to do it for you.

I think there's more threads on this, or something similar

Some of our guys machined some very nice letters to hang on the house. I don't know a damned thing about working with wood, but they're sanded, painted, and look great.

We designed, but never made, some letters for a Delt House. They would have been either bronze or brushed aluminum, and stand out from the wall a couple of inches with flourescent back lighting to make them "glow" around their edges.

Of course that's a little easier to do with Delta Tau Delta because there are no curves in either of the letters.

I have an "art welding" class in a few quarters, I'm going to make letters for our house. The wooden ones we have now are OK, but metal will be harder to steal (COUGH pisigCOUGH)

I looked into getting large letters (`3' to 5' tall) for our house made out of cement. I looked into a company that made them and would install them, but I can't find the number or site address right now.

You can get them as large as you want and they can add color to the cement so they never fade or anything. It was like 150 or maybe like 300 a letter though.

googled "fraternity letters sheet metal"

came up with www.buysignletters.com and they do sell Greek letters.

Our chapter has metal letters about 4 or 5 inches deep that are back lit, with I think is a neon light (yellow). They look really nice, and most chapters at Nebraska have similar set ups.

Cast Iron

We had letters made out of cast iron affixed to the house.

Letters if done right and tastefull can be of benefit.

I myself prefer a Badge Hanging from the front of the house.

The letters that are painted in Colors can look garious if not done right.:( True, letters can be more recognizable to other students and visitors.

Class and Fashion can and should dictate!:)

i bet you could find some letters for your house from lawn and garden catalogues-something like "plow and hearth". you might even be able to locate some at a garden center in your town. of course, the letters would be english not greek, but would probably be more reasonably priced than custom made.

my sorority house had zeta tau alpha in black script letters above the front door. very tasteful.

^ Those are on our house. They are brass I think. We had a local artist make them...they were not that expensive I don't think.
