No Song
The chapter I graduated from....at the opening we had classical music playing and no entrance song. We all stood as the PNM's were announced by the president "Alpha Xi Delta presents Jane Smith" and then their sister escort takes them to their table.
We same Remember when they exited. |
Samantha,
That sounds a lot like what our chapter does. We ahve singers sing a few songs during the ceremony including "Wonderfrul Journey" by Richard Marx and Donna Lewis, and "The Rose" by Bette Midler. Xi love and Mine, |
I was just told by our MVP that we aren't allowed to have music playing, it's just got to be us singing! :( So, I guess I'll keep to the song book, although some of those songs are kinda out dated and aren't very fun. thanks!

My chapter had lots of upbeat songs. Usually for recruitment we used a combination of both depending on the round. The first two days we did fast songs and the last two were slower.
Open Houses= A-Z-A-Z-A-Z-A-Z and Alpha Xi (is fun and cheer...) Skit Day=Boogie Woogie and Alpha Xi Delta's glad you came Formal Dessert=Castle Painted Blue and Gold; our version of "the Rose"; Alpha Xi (to Edelweiss) Pref=Rose Round and Remember Some other upbeat songs are the AXiD version of the CocaCola song; A-L-P-H-A; and I am an Alpha, I am a Xi My chapter also rewrote several pop songs for recruitment as well as several of the songs from the Lion King. You'd be amazed what will rhyme with "Xi"! I think all of the songs I've listed above are in Bonds but if not, I can post the words. Good luck! |
The song we sing every year for our enterance song goes like this:
Alpha Xi Delta is our cry, listen girls we'll tell you why Alpha Xi, those Alpha Xi's are the best, Alpha Xi's the best of all the rest, Alpha Xi, Alpha Xi, Alpha Xi Delta Alpha Xi Delta's really great pledge us now don't hesitate Alpha Xi those Alpha Xi's are the best Alpha Xi's the best of all the rest Alpha Xi, Alpha Xi, Alpha Xi Delta While singing it you do the lil cheerleader clap as i call it (slap thigh, clap, snap, clap, slap thigh repeat) There are more lines to the song but thats all I know. If you want to know more lines let me know and i'll ask one of our older girls who taught us. |
When I was pref day chair, I had soft classical music played and the pnm were entering and escorted to their seats. I understand that you aren't able to us the classical music but what about songs like "I Love the Rose" and use the first verse and maybe the third with a few of the lines reworked. It's more upbeat than some of our songs and would work well if you uses as many roses as we did on pref day.

Why no music?
I'd be curious to know why you can't have music playing -- is that a Purdue PH rule, or does she think it's dictated by National? Also, I'm assuming that "Evening Hymn" (aka Softly Now) is one of the songs you're thinking is melancholy? I've seen some chapters sing it so slowly that it becomes like a death march, but when done a little faster and with the harmony, it's really a beautiful song.

Thanks... I think it's a panhel rule at Purdue.... it sucks tho. But thanks for the ideas. We never used that song... i'll try it, otherwise we'll stick to "Rose Rose Rose"
thanks everyone!! Xi Love! Samantha |
I hope that this is not too late for you. I am an alumni of Alpha Eta and for the Open House round of rush we would sing "519 University Street"
Where's the house that's got the beat? 519 University Street Where's the home of all the elite? 519 University Street La De Da Those Alpha Xi's are the best La De Da The best of all the rest (repeat last two lines again) Open the door and take a peek 519 University Street Find the Sisterhood you seek 519 University Street Repeat We would line everyone up on both sides of the front porch and one side would sing the "la de da" and the other side would sing "those Alpha Xi's..." you get the picture. Anyhoo, I hope that this you get this in enough time to help you out. Xi love and mine, JoAnne |
