I was just about to post this.

HST was one of my favorite authors. :(

Requiescat in pace.

I'm pretty shocked. He was a great author and a fascinating man.

Very surprising and sad news. I can't say I agree with everything he's written, but "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail" is one of the absolute best history books I've ever read. I think it gives a solid understanding of what was a very important Presidential election (1972, McGovern vs Nixon).

A very intelligent man and a very sad passing. May he rest in peace.

Good night, Gonzo. Shocking to the end.

Was he ill? (yes I know he shot himself, but was it due to depression from being ill I mean) This news really floored me.

Please pardon me if this isn't true. I'm not at all sure, but I seem to recall that this was not his first attempt at suicide.

That may be way off base because I can't remember any details -- just something sticking in the back of my mind.

I seem to remember the same thing - but then I found this on Yahoo:

"The writer's compound in Woody Creek, not far from Aspen, was almost as legendary as Thompson. He prized peacocks and weapons; in 2000, he accidentally shot and slightly wounded his assistant trying to chase a bear off his property."

Maybe that's what you're thinking about?

I don't think so -- but again, it's only the vaguest of memories so it may be all in my mind.

Good for him, he made it.

I'll probably kill myself when I'm around the same the age.

I've only recently become a reader of his, but let me share this.............................................. .....................they won't let me, the point is, his work (and therefore his life) is finished.

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - The family of writer Hunter S. Thompson is looking for a cannon to blast his remains skyward, honoring a wish he often expressed.
