Pittsburgh Woman Sets Dog On Fire, Accidentally Kills Kids

PITTSBURGH -- Investigators in Pittsburgh say they have solved a nearly 15-year-old case in which a woman and her friend allegedly set the family dog on fire because the woman's mother wouldn't get rid of it.

The dog, in turn, wound up setting the house on fire, killing the woman's two toddlers.

Cold-case detectives haven't said exactly what broke the case against the mother, 34-year-old Tequilla Newsome, and her friend, 29-year-old Lachan Russell. Russell was 15 at the time.

Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said the detectives reinterviewed about 20 witnesses in the case and at least one offered more details in recent weeks, after becoming older, wiser and more religious.

The fire, around 2:30 in the morning of July 11, 1990, killed 2-year-old Montelle Thornhill and 3-year-old Charita Thornhill.

Montelle was allergic to the dog, but his grandmother -- with whom the family lived -- refused to get rid of it, police said.

Newsome tried to shoo the dog from the home, but it wouldn't run away, Bryant said. Later, she took the dog to downtown Pittsburgh, but the animal found its way back to the house, several miles away. That's when, Bryant said, Newsome and Russell decided to douse the dog in kerosene and set it afire.

When I heard about this, earlier today, I was sick - literally. What kind of sick person does this? There is absolutely no excuse for this - there are many animal shelters, to save nothing of animal rescue organizations.

Words cannot describe what I'd like to see happen to this person.

Couldn't the trifling b*tch take the dog to a shelter? How much energy does that take.

I feel sorry for what happened to the kids because they are innocent pawns in this but my grandmama always said "God don't like ugly!" Unfortunately in this case, karma bit her in the ass and I hope those kids are haunting her!

I hope they get locked up for a long time...she also needs a HUGE can of whoop ass opened on her

I see she was a teen when she had those kids...babies having babies

I hate to say it, but maybe Tequilla deserves a Darwin Award. No offense to the late Charita and Montelle, but that's definitely a gene pool that should be drained and closed.

Unfortunately, Tequilla's probably popped out a couple more in the 15 years since this happened.

FWIW, on the news last night, her neighbors were interviewed, and the woman's name is pronounced Ta-Quail-La.

And I agree about the Darwin Award theory. I just found a collateral ancestor who was definitely Darwin material!

Honey,
Where does this woman live?

She lives in Homewood (not a great area, fwiw).

And yes, like the bird!

That dog found its way back to Homewood after whatever-the-hell-dumb-name-bitch dumped it downtown???

Poor thing was a lot smarter than her :(
