Prince Charles to Marry Camilla

By MICHAEL McDONOUGH, Associated Press Writer

LONDON - Prince Charles announced Thursday that he will marry his lover Camilla Parker Bowles, putting an official seal on a long romance that Princess Diana blamed for the breakdown of her tempestuous marriage to the heir to the throne. The announcement ruled out the possibility that she would become queen.

Okay, my understanding (prior to this morning's announcement) was that, as possible titular head of the Church of England, Prince Charles was free to marry Camilla, but would have to renounce his claim to the throne to do so.

Which would make Prince William next in line for the throne - and the Queen will be turning 80 years old within a year and a few months. This could get interesting!

I loved the news this morning:

"Breaking news...Prince Charles to marry Camilla. In slightly less important news, North Korea admits to having nuclear weapons."

i believe that he still can be King, Camilla just won't be known as the Queen.

Exactly. His ascension to the throne is unfettered. Camilla, however, will be Her Royal Highness Princess Consort of Wales. Or something like that.

They're saying that on the news, but his uncle (the Duke of Windsor) had to renounce the throne to marry Wallis Simpson.

Maybe. Though his uncle's wife probably hadn't died eight years before.

The title of 'Princess Consort' is the same as the late Queen Victoria's husband Albert had (Prince Consort), apparently.

If Diana was still alive and married to Charles when he became King, she would still not queen. I believe she still would have been known as Diana, Princess of Wales. The Queen's husban is not a king, he is Prince Philip.

twostep 02-10-2005 10:53 AM

Yes. I think the Princess Consort title was chosen (she'll essentially be a 'duchess') as it was thought the publics wouldn't be ready to accept another 'Princess of Wales' or 'HRH ....'.

I'm fairly certain that, in order to be a Queen, a woman has to be born a Princess. Of course, this is the English terms - other countries has different rules.

I still don't get the hype:confused:

You think for a Royal Prince, who might be King (booooooring), he would pick out a hot chick and not some bar wench looking type.

How does that explain Diana, who was born simply the Honorable Diana Spencer, and became a Lady at the age of 8?

Her father wasn't an Earl until she was eight years old, just a Lord, until his father passed the title of Earl to him upon his (Diana's grandfather's) death. Diana, Princess of Wales, never was "Princess Diana".

As evidenced in my quote, I am quite familiar with how she became Lady. But you said, "I'm fairly certain that, in order to be a Queen, a woman has to be born a Princess."

I'm "fairly certain" that you were wrong.
