UTC student found dead in garage

Investigators are probing the death of a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga student found dead in her car early Monday morning, according to Chief Larry Sneed of the Red Bank Police Department.

"It appears to be accidental," Chief Sneed said.

Cassie Clements, 21, apparently had been out Sunday night and returned around 2:00 a.m. to a house she shared with a Chi Omega sorority sister, Chief Sneed said. Miss Clements pulled her car into the basement and shut the garage door, he said.

"She was talking on a cell phone and then just went to sleep," Chief Sneed said.

The telephone call probably had distracted her, and before long Miss Clements was breathing in the carbon monoxide fumes coming from her car's exhaust, the chief said.

A Hamilton County medical examiner's report confirmed the death from carbon monoxide poisoning, Chief Sneed said.

Funeral arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Report from News Channel 9

Friends and family buried a U-T-C student this afternoon who died a tragic death earlier this week.

The Red Bank Police says 21-year-old Cassie Clements died early Monday morning after she pulled her car into the garage and continued to talk on her cell phone with the engine running.
Reports say she died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning, but officials are waiting for the toxicology report to see what, if anything, may have influenced her decision to remain in the car.
Clements was pursuing a double-major in education and nursing at UTC.

She was a member of Chi Omega sorority.

The School says they are staying close by the Chi-O house and the classroom to help students through this difficult time.
The visitation was last night, with lines wrapping around the building.

This afternoon, The Clements family held an additional visitation at the Chattanooga Funeral Home for two hours for those wanting to pay their respects to the family.

The prior visitation was last night with lines wrapping around the building.

The family held a private burial this evening.

UTC officials say they will hold their own memorial service for Clements next week.

When a tragedy like this happens, the school says it's important for them to be there for the student body.

I was Cassie Clements Chi Omega Big Sister. I just recently stumbled onto this site and was reading the messages. I was very touched by the fact that Cassie's memory is being shared with Chi Omegas in many places.

She was a wonderful girl and her death was a great tragedy. Thank you for all the prayers that were sent for her family and friends.

Please accept my sympathy - Cassie will be sorely missed by both of her families, her personal one and her Chi Omega one. May she rest in peace.

Cassie was one of my close friends, and a big reason why I am a Chi Omega today. She was an amazing woman who gave real meaning to the Chi Omega Symphany!!! I was searching through posts and came across this one-- over a year later I can't help but tear up reading the story. Cassie was the kind of girl who was friends with everyone and would drop anything to help out a friend. She loved making others happy.
I remember walking into the house on Tuesday and I couldn't believe how many flowers and letters we had recieved from other chapters and other greeks. When something like this happens, we see the true bonds of our sisterhood.
Remember how lucky you are to be a part of such an amazing sisterhood and remember to tell your friends how much they mean to you every single day!!!
