Sisters First or Panhellenic
Sisters, I am being faced with a dilemma. I am the Panhellenic delegate for my chapter, and also the Panhellenic president. I have been given the opportunity to attend the SEPC(southeastern Panhellenic conference) in Atlanta, GA. However, this conference occurs the same weekend that my chapter is hosting State Convention. It wouldn't be such an issue if I was not the collegiate State Convention chair. I feel that my first responsibility is to my sisters, and I am so excited that we are hosting state convention in my city. However, I also feel as Panhellenic president that I should represent my CPC chapter. My Greek advisor says that Panhellenic comes first, but I disagree. I am at a loss as to what to do. Any suggestions?

Wow that is a tough decision.
Okay here are my thoughts though. I have to say I think Panhellenic comes first. I say this because going to their conference you are going to learn A LOT of information that you in turn will need to pass on to the chapter. Which is why I feel someone from the chapter needs to be there otherwise you won't the information right away. And who knows what their gonna say. Not that I think they are going to do this but I'm using it as an example, they could give information on changes their implementing for recruitment and thats HUGE. Again this is my personal opinion. I would highly suggest you talk to the chapter advisor and even your PD. They will be able to advise you on what you should do and which "one" you should really attend. |
Sisters...............they will always look out for you more than Panhellenic will, you should do the same.
Sorry, I guess I had a less than pleasant experience with Panhellenic. |
tabbi*girl, I would take a step back and ask yourself this:
If you miss the Panhellenic event, who will go in your stead, and what quality of notes will you get? If you miss the State Convention, who will go in your stead, and what quality of notes will you get? Then, I'd talk to your Chapter Advisor. This is truly a "pick 'em" situation, and you have to pick the one that will help you & those you are picked to serve better, and delegate your position to the other event. Unless you have an evil twin...? ;) |
I'd be curious to know what you chose to do. Keep us posted!

Thank-you to everyone who responded with suggestions and comments. I did speak with my chapter advisor and she is leaving the decision up to me. She did express to me what a wonderful opportunity that Atlanta will be, and that she would not like for me to miss that. However, she did feel like if I choose to go to Atlanta that I should appoint someone who I trust without a shadow of a doubt to take my place at state convention. With all of that said I will be going to Atlanta, and I have been replaced with someone who will do an excellent job. It was an extremely tough decision for me to make, and I don't feel like I am choosing panhellenic over my sisters which is how I felt in the beginning. I am very sad that I will miss out on all of the fun and exciting things that will happen at state convention, but in the long run going to Atlanta will benefit us tremendously. Thanks again for all of your thoughts and suggestions!

I'm glad it all is working out tabbi*girl!
And like you said, it's not like you are choosing something over your sisters. With the knowledge you get @ Atlanta you can not only help your own chapter, but also the campus panhellenic and that is a pretty cool thing! Have a safe trip! |
tabbi*girl, I hope you have a great and informative time in Atlanta! Be sure to stop in at Memorial Headquarters! ;)
What a wonderful dilemma to have in the first place! Congratulations!! |
Tough decision... Keep in mind that your sisters voted for you to be their delegate to Panhell, so even if you choose Atlanta, you are there representing your sisters, too!
|
Tabbi*girl, I have to say in my honest opinion- I think you made the right choice. I think in the long run, going to Atlanta will do the most good for your chapter and your CPC.
I was sad that I missed out on going to Atlanta when I was a panhellenic delegate... I hope you have a wonderful time!!! :) |
I also think you made the right choice. By sitting as Panhellenic president, you represent ADPi to the Panhellenic community at your univerisity...and you are the official soroity representative for the entire Greek community at your school.
Enjoy the experience and kudos to you for making the right leadership choice for your campus, your sorority and your position! |
