FEB 4th: GO RED Day

Toni Braxton was just on TJMS. She has HEART DISEASE. In conjunction with the American Heart Association, women should wear RED (Intensified Pink) to bring awareness that Heart Disease is the Number one killer among WOMEN.

My mommy died of heart disease. :( When I was on the train this morning, I saw an ad that said "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear," and there was a group of women in red. I wondered what it was for. Now I know. Thanks, Soror.

SKEEphistAKAte 02-02-2005 10:44 AM

WOW. I didn't know she had Heart Disease. Typically when I hear Heart Disease, I think of it affecting older people.

Now, if "Heart disease doesn't care what you wear" why are they insisting that we wear red?

AKA2D '91 02-02-2005 10:49 AM

I don't know why red. Maybe it has to do with the AHAs "colors" (red, white, black)

I guess when you think of the heart, you think of red. Or the blood after it is oxygenated turns red. Iiiiiiiiiiiii don't know. LOL

Actually, Toni said she had a virus during her Aida stint. The virus called car-something another caused the heart disease.

I took it to mean that Heart Disease does not care how well you dress or whether you wear the latest fashions, i.e. you can still get heart disease no matter how well you dress.

Ok. I understood why they chose the color red. I'm like, if it doesn't care what you wear, why are you insisting that I wear some particular type (color) of clothing? Maybe they should've said it doesn't care who you are...whatever.
Is it common for women as young as Toni to have heart disease? I know that there are rarities, but is this common?

AKA2D '91 02-02-2005 11:03 AM

I don't know if it is common, but if you have a family history of the disease, I"m sure you are more likely to get the disease. Toni's father had a heart attack and her mother is diabetic (which makes her prone to heart disease).

Check with your physician for more info.

Sounds like she had myocarditis that developed into a cardiomyopathy... That puts her having congestive heart failure. And the fact that she is a touring singer with a lot of stress exacerbates her condition. So in essence she has heart disease...

The "Go Red" campaign is to enlighten women that heart disease affects women as much as men, but the symptoms on an oncoming heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular disease may be different. Instense research from the AHA with $$$$ attached to it is actively being done and sought out...

Also, most of the drugs, like the statins my have differential effects on women than men... The estrogen factor may be playing a role...

What does this say about "Big Pharma"?

I have heart disease and it knows no age. And diabetics (which I am not) are prone to it as are people with high stress in their life (which I am.)

Many folx do not know they have it because maby times there are no symptoms or the symptoms are common of other ailments.

I found out after spending the last two weeks with my Mother in her transition and one day suffered severe heartburn. Although it was determined that I did have an attack of angina and not a heart attack, the tests did show blockage in one of my arteries, so they inserted stents to keep them open.

But if I had not suffered the angina brought on by the stress of my Mother's death, I would not have known about the blockage because I had previously had no symptoms.

I will be wearing red on Friday.

So, the "Go Red" campaign is for all women?

Sunday was the one year anniversary of my mother's first heart attack. I can remember everyone in the Cardio-ICU wing wearing red on the one day, but I thought it was for Valentine's Day.

When I visit my clients on Friday, I'll be sporting Red!

My grandma passed away due to heart disease and I will allow no other woman in my family go out like that! My Aunt joined Curves, then me and my mom joined last week! Also, I am considering returning to my 6 yr vegetarian state, although even now I don't eat beef or pork.

We are fighting the good fight and I am wearing red (maybe with a little pink or my AKA ice pin:D ) on Friday!

You know that I signed up for one yesterday, lol. I love FREE. I also signed up for one of those programs, but I forget which one. Starts with a C.

I don't own a single item of clothing that's red. Not one thing. But Macy's has the pins on sale, so I might go buy one (and if you do, or if you wear your pin, you get 15% off in the store all day) to wear tomorrow.
