Delta Zeta Closes U. Massachusetts Chapter
 

Delta Zeta National is closing the U. of Massachusetts-Amherst chapter, according to the student paper:

According to the article, an unspecified drug violation was involved in DZ National's decision.

Arrangements are being made to find housing for the women who were living in the house, the paper says.

Sounds like a very difficult time for DZ and probably for all Greeks at U. Mass-Amherst.

This is so sad. The DZ's at my school are a great bunch of girls, and their chapter just opened a couple of years ago. :( I'm not a DZ, but it's always sad to hear of a chapter closing, however, the UMass girls should have known better.

If you mean the CHAPTER closed, say so. This makes it sound for the first two paragraphs like they just tossed them out of the facility and then it says they did close the chapter.

You have to wonder if there's more to the story than this.

Closing a chapter because someone took a picture of a single instance of what appears to be a drug related item seems pretty extreme. It could just be someone's (brain lock -- hou do you spell:) souviniour.

there must be more. Last time I checked a pipe was not illegal, otherwise there wouldnt be stores and street vendors across the country selling them. And wouldnt his taking a picture inside the house w/o permission constitute a violation of privacy.

I'm guessing (hoping) this was an on-campus house - however, I do question what a maintenance worker is doing with a camera unless he was called for something like a pipe leak, etc. If he was just walking through with a camera, that's really fishy.

This all seems quite fishy to me, but then I guess I don't really know all of the circumstances. Interesting to wonder why that pciture was taken. But I know I've seen stores that sell pipes and such, so I always thought owning them must not be illegal. Otherewise how could these stores be open.

I, too, think this seems fishy. How do we know it's not the maintenance worker's pipe, and he's trying to get the DZ's into trouble? At my undergrad school, students could have jobs as maintenance workers. The article doesn't mention the age of the maintenance worker, so for all we know, it could be the boyfriend of a member of a rival sorority who just wanted to cause problems.

If it's campus owned housing, it's not unusual for Housing to have their maintenance workers equipped with cameras. Shortly after Halloween, I received a couple of pictures from our housing office where a maintenance worker photographed some items in (our one on-campus) fraternity house that could outwardly look incriminating. (a chair with restraints, a paddle, etc.). However they had actually been used as props in their chapter "House of Horrors" (haunted house) two nights earlier. Fortunately, I had been there and recognized the stuff from that, but the Housing office jumped to a lot of conclusions. But the main thing is, beware, it is not uncommon for Housing staff to take pictures that can be incriminating without you knowing it!

I find it very strange that, according to the article, the worker sent the picture to "Delta Zeta's national chapter in Ohio" (I'm assuming that means their HQ.

Why would a university maintenence worker go through all the trouble of finding out where their HQ was to send them a picture? Why didn't he just give the picture to a supervisor and let that go up the "chain of command"... that's just fishy.

The article also says "Details surrounding the alleged violations have been unclear" ... so shouldn't they do some kind of investigation or something before shutting a chapter down?

I can't imagine DZ headquarters would have shut this chapter down with out investigating the issue hands-on and finding some significant evidence that girls were using drugs in the house, or many members were using drugs excessively in a manner that was affecting their chapter's reputation.

As others have said, drug paraphenalia in and of itself means little -- they could be hanging onto it for a friend, it could be the prop for a costume (haha), they could be smoking pipe tobacco (haha x 2) in it . . .

Doesnt a lot depend on the types of "Pipes"?

In my experience, the reasons for closing a chapter are often kept very confidential within the GLO and the media is often speculating about what those reasons are. Rarely would the newspaper know the whole story.
