Would I be dissapointed?
I'm currently a high school student looking at colleges (Trinity in San Antonio, SMU, Texas Christian Univ, Millsaps, Vanderbilt, and Tulane).
I'm really interesting in joining a sorority for the close friendships, philanthropy, etc, and I'm sure I would enjoy partying, but I'm just not a "crazy stereotypical slutty partier"-- I guess I'm just more down-to-earth and I'm not into the whole one-night-stand thing. Do y'all think, with the schools I listed, I would be dissapointed in what I found at these places? Any advice would really be appreciated. Thanks. |
HI,
i don't know anything about the schools you mentioned, but i can tell you that i went to a very liberal school (CA what else would you expect) and i was kinda of conserned cause i don't drink, nor do drugs or anything you would think of as a stereotypical. I went through rush and i was clear in a polite way that i would not participate in any activities that included these things. I would say something like, yeah my friends like to drink, but they know that if they want to hang out with me then they don't drink. I kinda of tried to include these comments in conversations not to be rude or make any assumptions about the sorority that i was at, but i did it in a way to let people know that i would not be the member that would be participating in these activities. I joined a house that had members that did drink but, NEVER did any one ever think that i would drink, ect. My sisters cared about me and would never try to talk me into doing something that i am not okay with. I think by politely expressing your views on drinking, in a very appropriate way will let what ever sorority you are at that you do not want to participate in these type of activities. Also, someone pointed out to me that it was obvious what sororities partied a lot cause of the slide show presentations during rush could not include any alcohol so sororities would simple cut out the beer cans from the picture and my friend pointed out that it was obvious by looking at the pictures which sororities drank a lot by the amount of cut outs in their slide show pictures. Hope this helps, debbie |
if you truly think that all sorority women are "crazy stereotypical slutty partiers" then you need to grow up.
read GC for a while and then form YOUR OWN opinion. |
If you dont try Greek Life, not only will you miss a huge part of Collegette Life, but after Graduation also.
While I am the Oldest Member of My Chapter, the friendships made over the many years is priceless! If I hadnt done what I did, I would never know the Many Brothers who I have been with over 40 years. You only get out of a Group what you put into it!;) |

And I really hate it when people respond to potential Greeks like this because it just reinforces the idea that we're stuck-up bitches. Whether or not you'd like to admit it, there are plenty of places where sorority women are primarily "crazy stereotypical slutty partiers." And, of course, there are plenty of places where they're not. |
Oooh. Could you list those places for us guys lol?

I don't know anything about those schools, but honestly, I think you're going to have to pick your school based on what it's going to do for you academically, and then see if you like the sorority life there. It's just something that you're going to have to figure out for yourself. That's what Recruitment is all about. If you meet a sorority that you get a bad vibe from, then realize that they probably aren't for you and try to find a group that is.

Liz, talk to students that go to the schools listed. Get a perspective from those in and out of the greek life and you should be able to get a good picture of what the college life is on campus. In some schools, it's hardcore partying, at others, it's zero tolerance for fun. Since I have been to any of those, I couldn't tell ya. Good luck and we hope you have a good time wherever you go. |

IS FUNDAMENTAL. |
I have or have had friends at Tulane, Millsaps, and SMU. They have all enjoyed their time at these schools. I have met Phi Mu's from SMU and they definitely did not seem into the party scene. A friend from home went to Millsaps and was in a sorority there. What I know about these schools is that they are pretty conservative. You usually do not find a wild and crazy greek crowd at a conservative university.

Liz, I think that you will find many people who share and respect your values in college. Just keep your values in mind when looking at sororities. I know a senior in high school who is concerned about the same thing so you are not alone.
This is a very exciting time in your life. I wish you the best! :) |
Thanks for all your replies. From what I'd seen on here, y'all seemed nice, so that's why I felt ok "pouring my soul out" to a bunch of strangers.
I appreciate it..:) |
My boyfriend is an alum of Trinity in San Antonio. He wasn't in a fraternity, but I've asked him a lot about the Greek system. Trinity has local sororities and fraternities (as opposed to national ones). From what he told me, it's a fairly laid-back system. Here's a link to the Greek life webpage: http://www.trinity.edu/departments/s...reekLife2.html

Seriously, relax people.
Breathe in and breathe out. When I used to watch Family Matters, I think Uncle Carl used to say: "1, 2, 3 What the heck is bothering me?". You all should say this over and over again to calm down. I love all of you. Don't ever forget that. I love you all like Desmond Tutu and Sammy Sosa love you all. I love you all. -Rudey |
This is a great thread.
Honestly, everywhere you go, minus Bob Jones, you will have heavy party people and people who choose not to. I went to a school that was pretty reminicient of the movie PCU. I have to say we did have some great parties, but some of my favorite nights were just being loud around the house. I found my balance and had a lot of sisters who did not drink. I don't really think I know of anyone who was pressured to do something they didn't want. That, at least at my college, was considered more of a high school thing. Cool did not exist. We were all losers. :) Choose a school for the academics, don't worry about the social scene too much unless it is very small, then it might be more of a consideration. You'll find your nitche :) Good Luck! And if you rush, keep us updated! We like those stories. |
