I've got to say....this is probably the best Alpha Week I've seen! Mary Frances Berry, Angela Davis, scholarships, programs galore...

Here's another Alpha Week, this one sponsored by an alumni chapter in Greensboro:



Alpha Week Celebration Activities, Jan. 30 - Feb. 5


The Kappa Lambda Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will sponsor a week of enrichment activities targeted primarily to the African-American male.

Titled “Mind, Body and Soul,” these activities will be held Jan. 30 through Feb. 5. Most events will be held on the campus of Elon University, Moseley Center, Room 215, unless otherwise noted. Following is a listing of events which are free and open to the public:

• Sunday, Jan. 30 @ 11 a.m. “We Worship and Give Thanks” -- Members of the fraternity and their guests will worship at the Oak Springs Baptist Church, 9070 U.S. Highway 158 West in Stokesdale, N.C. The pastor of the church, the Rev. Eric M Gladney, is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

• Monday, Jan. 31 @ 7 p.m. “Meet the Men of Alpha.” -- Highlights of this program include learning more about the history of Alpha Phi Alpha, along with the chance for the community to talk with members of the fraternity.

• Tuesday, Feb. 1 @ 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. “Health Issues Affecting the African-American Community” -- Highlights of this program include on-site testing for bone marrow and Sickle Cell Anemia. Information on other critical health issues that impact the African-American community will be available.

• Wednesday, Feb. 2 @ 7 p.m. “The Changing Roles of the Relationships” -- This discussion will focus on the roles of males and females, singles and married people in relationships at home, work and in social settings.

• Thursday, Feb. 3 @ 7 p.m. “Unlocking the Door to Financial Security” -- This workshop will focus on how to save for retirement, secure homeownership and prepare for the future.

• Friday, February 4, @ 7 p.m. “Building on the Past to Prepare for the Future” -- This celebration will recognize members of Alpha Phi Alpha who have at least 50 years of service as well as those who have made significant contributions to the local community. This celebration will be held in the Faculty Dining Hall on the campus of N.C. A&T State University.

• Saturday, February 5 @ noon, at St. James Presbyterian Church, 820 Ross Ave., Greensboro -- An oratorical contest will be held for high school students on the topic “African American Leadership: Does It Currently Exist?” The winner will receive $1,000 to assist with college expenses. The runner-up will receive $500.

The Kappa Lambda Chapter is the Greensboro Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., which is the nation’s oldest Black Greek-letter organization for college-trained men. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The Kappa Lambda Chapter was founded in Greensboro in 1923.
